So I'm about 70 percent done with my gst to gsx conversion and a thought hit me that I will have to smog in a year . Has any one ever had any problems smogging there converted 2g I live in ca and there pretty strict but I already passed with a bigger turbo and 3inch exhaust

why would there be any issues? they DO make them in AWD....i'm from MI where we don't have any yearly inspections of any sort, but as long as it's done proper there should be no issues.

why would there be any issues?.

Because California is very strict about any mods. In California fwd cars are tested on a dyno for emmisions and awd are not, if the car was originally fwd they will want to test it on the dyno but they only have fwd dynos at the smog places.

I cab I can always pull the drive line off for the dyno but will I have issues with my evap solenoid I had to take off my fwd gas tank will me ecu complete the system test for the obd 2 scan

Wow they even put it on a Dyno? the most strict state i've lived in was PA....they just do basic inspections, a lot of places don't even care and just toss the stickers on as long as nothing major is wrong(tires on wear tabs, obviously broken things, ec)

If it gives a cel it won't pass but you can pass with up to 2 monitors not ready. You could disable the evap cel in ecmlink if you have it and as long as enough of the other monitors were ready it would pass the obd2 scan.

No you cant. Not unless you have a welded center diff in the trans. Im not real sure how you passed with a "bigger turbo and 3 inch exhaust" Most places I saw in california would shit on you for that stuff. And I lived in Vacaville, so not too far from you. I used to date a chick in stockton so I know it isnt far! I was fortunate though, I was military and had out of state plates so I didnt have to do any of that crap.

Unless you know someone who will just pencil whip you a smog sheet I dont even see you passing with even the front mount. They're assh*les about smog in Ca.

I don't think FMIC would be a problem being that it came from te factory with an intercooler.

As far as smog there are a good bit of places that will look past quiet a few mods depending on how well you know them. As far as the AWD conversion I think they might give you a hard time if it tells them it's FWD.. I'll see if I can't ask a gold station today

Yes, as you are right however, any mods without a CARB sticker is illegal in the state. Although the car comes stock with an intercooler, a somewhat "smart" smog tech would know that the new shiny part is most likely aftermarket and isnt CARB legal.

That what I don't understand.. Our intercoolers/turbos don't have a carb legal number so other than the new shiny parts what's there to see? Like the greddy FMIC I have is carb legal but it only shows trough the .gov site not on the actual peice unlike my intake

The stock parts don't need carb #s so if it doesn't look stock they will want to see the carb# Technically the carb # for the Greddy Intercooler only covers 95-97 Eclipse so they can say its not legal for talons or 98-99 eclipse even though its all the same engine. They don't even follow there own rules so its kind of hard to know what will pass and what wont so it depends on how lenient the place you go to is. Its only getting worse with the new STAR test stations those are even more strict.

If you go to a legit smog shop, they're most likely going to tell you they won't be able to inspect/test. Once you tell them you have the AWD swap they're going to send you to the California state Smog Referee. Then you have to pass inspection there....Cali is such bulls***

The smog shop I go is pretty cool he didnt care about my intake or other mods and I passed with flying colors I didn't know you could disable the monitors with ecmlink.. why would I need a welded diff.

What wud happen if I just removed the t case n drive line nd went to get it smogged

How does it damage it, in theory it seems like it would work but what is it doing that is killing the vc, what if i just removed the rear axles and plugged up the holes LOL thanks for all the replies too. what are signs that the vc is bad, before i did the conversion i bought a sour gsx drove it all the way from southern cali to northern cali with only one bolt in the t case (didnt know untill i got home) car drove fine but it did shred the output shaft to the t case and the coupler in the t case had only 5% teeth left so i didnt have any power to the back and the transmission was fine

I'm not sure if you understand how the differentials work.

A standard differential will allow either side to spin faster than the other. That's why cars with standard diff's will spin one wheel when they lose traction. In order to avoid that issue, our cars have a Viscous Limited Slip Differential in the center (and rear for some) which uses a Silicone filled coupler to speed up the slower side.

So if you remove the transfer case or rear axles, your basically forcing the coupler to drive the front diff. That kind of stress will quickly overheat the silicone and cause permanent failure. The only way around this would be welding the center diff or installing a viscous coupler eliminator.

I thought the center diffs were open stock.

Yeah, they're an open diff.... until the VC engages. :p

But in all seriousness, I've never heard of a stock non-LSD center diff. If I'm not mistaken, the VC even helps hold the diff assembly together.

that makes a lot more sense on why not to drive it over there, i have a year to figure it out so im not to worried bout it right now

Im looking at getting a 97 eclipse gst but i live in North Carolina and the county im in requires obd 2 inspection no smog test the garage i go to for inspections is cool with me i use to work there but my ? Is this car has a fully built motor full 3 inch exhaust and all he good things along with ecmlink v3 will the car pass inspection ?
