I'm only a few days away from attempting the 2200 mile trip to Alaska, trying make sure I have everything I need for when I break down.

Ended up removing the rear seat and spare tire, shipping them with my home items. Two full size spares will sit in their place. Didn't like that people could see in the trunk space so I make a back piece out of cardboard and my leftover headliner material. Tracked down a nice roof box as well that still allows me to use the sunroof and hatch without contacting anything.

Hopefully everything goes smooth and I'll have some decent pictures from the trip.

Well, I'm happy to say that the car survived the 2200 mile drive with zero issues. Was pulling 10-12 hour days driving mostly at highway speeds, with tons of gravel sections of road to have fun with; longest section being 50 miles.

I can't say enough good things about the hotbits setup, I was driving much faster than I should have been through some really rough roads and it handled everything without any issues. The Blizzaks were also very impressive, acting almost as well as a summer tire and reactive when avoiding potholes.

I have to deal with in-processing to my base and finding a home over the next few days, so I'll have to wait to post photos from my good camera. I'll throw a few from my phone down below though.

Another small update. Work is keeping me busy with the Red Flag missions going on so I'm hurting for time to mess with the car.

Latest project was getting ready for the months of darkness coming up. Most of the cars I've seen in the area have large light bars or lamps bolted to the front. I really want the car to stay as stock as possible so I ended up ordering a painless aux wire harness so I can run a 100w bulb without worrying about the stock wiring/components.

Install was pretty straight forward, hardest part was finding an area to mount the everything where it wouldn't be noticed.

I ended up installing the switch in the center console under my cup holder tray. The way I wired it, I can leave the switch on to have day time running lights, and then about 5 seconds of light after removing the keys. When I find some better switches, I'll mount a second in the area to have a hidden fuel pump switch.

As far as playing with the car, there aren't any roads here to have fun with other than straight sections. It's given me the chance to stop dumping money in the car though and start doing some projects to better the house/yard. Thankfully, I share a garage with the neighboring house and another dsm owner is moving in next month. Working on his car should keep me breaking mine so I can fix it.

I'm still trying to reduce rotational mass on the car so I ended up getting an aluminum driveshaft from The Driveshaft Shop. I'm really impressed with the quality and ease of installation; only issue is the yoke doesn't have a dust shield incorporated so I'll be keeping an eye on that. Thought about swapping the stock yoke on the arm but the new shaft has a slightly larger u-joint.

Managed to get down to 10 degrees Fahrenheit before snow finally dropped; I'll spend a few days getting used to the car in the snow and then explore for some fun sections of road. Hopefully it holds together and survives -60 here.

Happy to say the Talon is still running strong even in -30 degree temperatures. Only new updates are changing the timing components and beating on it. So far 7 inches of snow does nothing to the car and the blizzaks keep impressing me more and more. Getting harder to take pictures here, only a few hours of sunlight then complete blackness.

Currently searching for a BRZ in the lower 48 to use as a daily, then I can work on some of the bigger projects on the Talon like hubs, bushings, etc...

Managed to find a BRZ to use as a daily; had my brother in Oregon pick it up from the dealer and start getting it ready for the winter here. Around 47K on it but have records for oil changes every four/five thousand miles. I'm excited that I'll be able to tear into the Talon more and prep it for some form of racing.

Had 15 inches of snow drop overnight here and had some fun trying to survive for two days in the Talon. I did manage to bury it in my driveway; tried to plow my way through 20+ inches that collected over my 48 hour shift at work. Can't say enough good things about how the car handles in this weather; I think I'm going to look into a taller tire for next year though

Winter is almost finished here and both cars survived. I'm surprised how well the BRZ performs in the snow as well; took some time to get comfortable and play with it but I'm glad that I can confidently drive it year round. First car I've owned that I don't want to modify; fun, low weight, and reliable.

I ended up taking the Talon out of service for a month to do some maintenance since it's over 200k now. Installed new hubs in the front, tie rod ends, control arm bushings, sway bar bushings, cleaned the hotbits, resprayed the inner fender areas, fixed some oil leaks and so on... Also bought a Griots polisher and went over the car; don't know why I didn't do this years ago.

Current plan is to put some GSC S1 cams in and replace the head-gasket. I don't have it in me to hack the car for a cage or tear the interior out so I'll just keep it a "sleeper" that I can beat on. I'm also going to see if I can alter the stock frame rail under paneling from the BRZ to fit the Talon. Neighbor has some connections to the machine shop so I'll see if I can bribe them to CNC a front section if I can come up with a blueprint. And best of all, I'm going to get off my butt and remove the fart can to install the muffer I bought 6 years ago.

Neighbor and I took our dsms out to the Cruising with Santa event in North Pole, AK. There was a decent showing with a pretty wide variety of vehicles; my favorite being the Model T's that are daily driven here during our three month break from snow.

Not even 12 hours after the show, I'm tearing it completely apart. The head-gasket is needing replace and I figured I'd mess around with some other things as well to make the car easier to get in trouble with. Pulled the valve cover and happy to see my stock cams still look decent after 260,000 miles; going to try some GSC 1 cams though to make the most of the HTA 68.

Once it's running, I'll do my best to ignore the tiny voice in my head and actually start getting it dirty to earn my stay here.

Installed a Cometic HG and GSC S1 cams, as well as a bunch of miscellaneous items that needed to get cleaned up. Had some extra caliper paint so I decided to test how it would hold up on a valve cover for now; I'll finish painting it if it doesn't cause any issues.

Initially, I was pulling my hair out trying to tune the car but I've started to get it dialed in. Boost est and A/F est are finally inline with actual numbers during pulls; I have a decent cruise tune now but it still needs attention. Log from the second video link below shows an estimated 340 hp at 16psi. Sorry about the quality of the video; still trying to figure out how to get the camera to work.

It's been a really busy summer and winter is already in full effect. What little free time I had was spent helping the neighbor/friends with their projects and trying to button up the Talon. I think we've had 5 different dsm's through the garage to end up building two more solid ones; neighbor now has a 2g with a 6bolt that he dailies, and a friend has a 1ga with a N/A motor slapped in with a turbo.

Exhaust is finished and most recently noticed some smoke on startup so I used it as an excuse to get some GSC valve seals, springs, and lifters. Last item I'm chasing is boost creep. May try and install a high flow cat to restrict the exhaust and see if that works, really don't want to push the car any harder. I'm estimating 320 at the wheels and I"m close to maxing out my 750cc injectors.

Installed a Volk crossmember setup to lose some weight. Pretty straight forward install, with only a couple issues that need addressed. Had to drill new holes in the front motor mount, I'll weld some washers when I can. I'm also running a 2g radiator that is taking up more room than I'd like. Plan on going back to a 1g setup but need to weld the lower mounts back to the stock locations.

Not sure about the motor mount; I have mount 347 and it should have been a direct bolt in. Car does have over 210K on the body so things don't line up as well as they used to. I want to add some fender braces as well but waiting to see if anyone starts fabricating them since the 1g has been getting more parts made lately.

This should make an skid plate easier to mount as well, using u-bolts to support it.

Been spending most of my free time helping the neighbor with his 1g. Removed all sound deadening, firewall "blanket", trim/brackets in the rear, etc. Rebuilding his wire harness and getting it setup for Meth injection. He's still running the turbo off of a 5.9 cummins, should be a fun car.

I forgot to mention that I rebuilt my entire engine wire harness; removed unnecessary wires and I don't have any cut/hacked sections anymore. WB is pinned directly into the EGR ECU location and I isolated my knock sensor from the rest of the harness. Wish I would have done this years ago, solved many issues with the biggest being phantom knock.

Roads are horrible; temperatures here are finally getting back down to -20 and below but we kept going over freezing with rain, coating the roads in ice. Unfortunately that takes the BRZ out of the picture since I don't trust anyone else on the streets.

Not the update I wanted to post, but I'll make the best of the situation. Was driving home and noticed road noise was louder than normal; roads were just grooved again since temperatures are coming up so didn't think that hard about it. After pulling in the driveway I figured I'd check under the car just in case...noticed a very clean section of the exhaust near the diff....

Pulled the car in the garage and found that my pinion seal had failed, dumping fluid everywhere. Pulled the drain plug and was covered in fine silver shavings.

I've been putting off work on the rear end, but don't have a choice now. Dropped the rear subframe and separated everything. I'll be taking the diff into Fairbanks to get the bushings/seals replaced, poly subframe/trailing arm/lower control arm bushings, Bulfab mustache bar, and attempt to replace the hub assembly with the parts I picked up a year ago.

Also discovered that FEAL can rebuild DT2 Hotbits. The winter has been pretty rough on the car and the coilovers have finally started to leak. When temps start to stay above 0 degrees I'll start looking into sending them out.

For now, I'll keep enjoying the BRZ and getting dirty looks as I attempt to get around.
