who made that front sub-frame for you????
It was made by Joshua Callahan out of Pennsylvania i believe. He's primarily on Facebook. Very, very nice guy but his customer service is extremely lacking. He's just overwhelmed by the work he's got I think. I'm still waiting on the tubular crossmember with the front motor mount.

Finals are this week for me, so I'm still kinda taking it easy on the car. I did get tired of studying all day, so I decided to go out and do a little bit to the car.

Fixed a few more sagging body parts. Made a bracket for the front bumper to keep it from drooping, and made a new way to bolt the third intercooler mount on. I guess something from the core support area has been removed by a PO.
Still need to fix the driver lower door molding, and the side skirts, as you'll see in the pic.

I've got all the fuel, and vacuum lines made and connected. (except the booster, still have to clearance the alternator a little) All engine bay wiring is done as well. Just need to shorten the throttle cable, and get a nice stainless braided clutch line so I can hide the only remaining visible component on the passenger side of the bay.
Still really dirty from sitting for so long, but I'm loving how it's starting to look.

Nice I've owned a few since 94 I'm sure I'll grab another thinking a evo 8 too.

This car's older than I am haha. This would be my second DSM. I had a 97 GST Spyder as a daily in highschool/early college. Was my pretty much my first car.

I too have been it the game since around 95 and I think it's pretty cool to have older guys as well as some younger guys keeping these cars going.:D Good luck with the car Paintballaa5! It's looking really nice! :thumb:

Thank you! If that's the case I was two when you first got one.
I definitely have the community here to thank for keeping me on the right path, and not getting into some of the stupid stuff that we see in the car scene these days.

Question, what do you use as your powder coating stripper? I have used a lot of different products. The best thing I have ever used is from a powder coating supplier, but its $20 for a half gallon and its only good for one use. I tried MEK and it does a decent job, but leaves a lot of gelled up coating in the corners and hard to clean places.

Are you talking about removing powder coat, or stripping and prepping a part for powder?
I've never gotten any of the chemicals to strip powder, and I have an extremely hard time removing it if I ever have to.
But to prep a part I have a sandblaster. It's really the best way to do it. I use a relatively fine aluminum oxide media that can be bought at Tractor Supply. It works really well for light-medium amounts of rust, and takes normal paint off fairly easily.
Your air compressor will make a huge difference in how well it works.

If it's aluminum I'll clean it off in the sink really well. Steel parts get a little more attention. I'll blow them off really well with compressed air then give them an alcohol bath.

Mask if necessary, and give a final alcohol wipe down/air blast and it's good to go.

I used to have a small powder coating business. Prep is 90% of the finished product.
I was just looking over the pictures and your valve cover wasnt the right shade so you changed it. I assume you stripped it and used a different powder?

I tell you what, I miss my 1gb from my avatar like nothing else... and this build is serious inspiration man. I have 3 2ga Talon TSI AWD's I'm flipping so I can grab myself a super clean 1gb Talon shell to do something like this with... Can't wait! Keep it up man!

Oh cool, I am doing somewhat the same thing while I'm in school. It pays my bills, and keeps me available for all my school stuff.

Actually, I (embarrassingly) sprayed over it with a paint match rattle can. It's the orange from newer nissans, but the cars actual color is Lemans Sunset, from the 350z. So it's pretty close, but I think I've decided on having a paint shop paint it with the actual paint that's on the car. That or I'll strip it down and try again.

That's awesome, thank you man. This is my first 1g, and I really like it so far. If anything, it's much easier to work on than my 2g.

No harm in that! The color matches very well. A lot better than the powder did.

The powder actually matched pretty well if I had applied it like normal. But I tried to do a chrome base then add the transparent orange, when I should have just done the color. I have grounding issues and couldn't get it to apply well, so I had to go back and re coat it again and it got really thick and it altered the color.

Man, Ive had that happen before. A friend wanted his valve cover in a candy cherry red, which I had. I decided to do a chrome under to make it pop a bit more and the powder went on too thick at some points and turned it pink in some areas and blood red in others. An adjustable powder coating gun would have really helped. Lower voltage helps get into tighter spots, higher voltage helps with multiple coats. It was a garage job, not done at the shop so I was using the powder gun I use for smaller parts.

Anyway, this build is awesome. I had a customer abandon a 2Ga GST in that same color at my shop once. I should have kept it >_<

Yea I have the Caswell adjustable gun. It works great but I need a proper dedicated ground. I tried driving a ground rod last week, but the area around where I shoot, the soil is super loose and always moist. I drove it down about 7 ft, and easily pulled it back up by hand. I could also drop it all the way back down. So it obviously wasn't grounding like it should. I'll have to try some other stuff, but being at a rent house, I don't want to do anything super permanent.

I appreciate it man, i've put a ton of time into all the details.. I think it's definitely paid off. Im going to try to start it this weekend/next week.

Finished all my finals!
My roommate has challenged me to have the car started by next Wednesday night, so ya'll should see some progress in the next couple days.

As for last night, I went ahead and made some new radiator bushings, and coated the brackets, my hood hinges, and shifter assembly. ( If you are curious how to get the new bushings, check my write up here: http://www.dsmtuners.com/threads/1g-radiator-bracket-bushings.503187/ ) Rebuilt the shifter with the Symborski kit, and "new" plastic bushings that were in my buddies parts car.
