Good afternoon. Just trying to finish up my engine build, and its my first time doing timing. I have Fidanza adjustable gears, and they have 2 sets of timing marks. Per Fidanza, one set is for the Evo, and the other is for the 420a Eclipse. They couldnt give me a straight answer however as to which was which.

I tried doing the timing, attempting to use the double timing marks to no avail. I was able to get it this close using the single marks on the gears. Is this close enough? Or do i need to have it exactly perfect? Keep in mind, this is with the crank sprocket lined up perfectly with the arrow on the oil pump. Intake cam dowel is pointing down, exhaust cam dowel is pointing up.

Also, please note the amount of slack in the belt. I am pulling up with a good amount of force. Is that too much slack in the belt?

Nevermind on the brackets. I think i got those figured out. They mount to the block and bolt to the trans, one on the intake side and one on the exhaust side if I am correct. Still curious about the timing if anyone can confirm its okay.

is that a 2.4?
did you spin the crank 2 full rotations and make sure the marks on the cam are still lined up?

you might be slightly off

are you rolling without the timing cover so you can tune the cam gears or just because they always break and you haven't found another one yet?
if you never noticed, the inner timing cover has an alignment ridge that makes it realllllly easy to line up the cam gears

If you look at the pictures you provided, the timing marks are inbetween the teeth. The Fidanza gears have the marks on the teeth. Could that be the issue? I have been out working on this for 5hrs, and it is not possible to get the single marks to line up perfect and have the TDC marks on the crank and oil pump to line up perfect as well. Its just not possible.

With the gears, they have 2 sets of timing marks. I am currently using the single lines, but there is a set of double lines. The double lines seem to be set so the space is inbetween the teeth. Should I use those instead? This is turning to a freaking nightmare.

Did you move the cams when changing the cam gears ...... Yes I would switch to the double lines. If you moved the cams when changing the gears this will account for deviations in the timing components. The last thing is that you can simply put the stock cam gears on and time the motor, once timed then lock everything down and remove the stock gears and return to the adjustable ones ..... also make sure that the adjustable one are zeroed out correcctly

Yes, the cams were moved. The head was redone at a machine shop, so the whole thing was stripped and then put back together. The gears have been zero'd correctly as far as I can tell. They are at "0" on the adjustable scale. Not sure how to tell aside from that.

Okay, redid the gears using the double marks instead of the single marks. Now, the smaller of the 2 double marks line up PERFECT. The TDC marks also line up perfect at the same time. Kinda hard to see in the full shot, but everything seems to be great. The lines are also inbetween the teeth, just like the factory gears.

Is this better?
