When installing this gasket would there be any negative side effects with wiping it down with a rag and brake cleaner? Just wondering as it has a dark gray paint of some kind on it around the cylinder holes etc, although it doesn't feel sticky like it some sort of sealant nor is it thick.

you for sure don't wanna get any brake parts cleaner on the head gasket. if it is an OEM MLS and it doesn't look like this you probably should get a new gasket. Brake cleaner will f*** up the coating on it

I second dustyboner, but when money is tight copper spray helps for a seal. As said above spend the money once and get it done right.

I copper spray my MLS HG even when it was knew and my head was freshly resurfaced. Boosted to 35 psi and made 580 awhp with zero problems. I even reused the HG after cleaning off the old copper spray and it works perfect.
