Hx35/T3 vs Hx40/BEP.55???

I'm running the Hx35/bep .55 setup now and I'm considering a hx40. Before I switch I was wondering thoughts on the hx35 in t3 form vs the hx40 in bep. 55 housing.
 
I have ran the a7 blade hx35 in the bep .55 and it was an awesome street turbo @28psi on a stock 7bolt. I don't believe you'll gain a whole lot going to the t3 hot side.

This time around I have a 60mm hx40 in the T3 shooting for 35psi on the built engine

How much boost are you running now?
 
I run 32 psi. Last dyno I maxed out my fuel system, but still hit 483 whp. Fuel system has been upgraded and returned but I haven't hit the dyno.

Lol the .70 AR T3 will make light years more power up top, DSM flange hotsides are very restrictive on top end.

People have always said that but I feel it may be a bit of a misconception. I've run a .55 hx40 housing for 3-4 years now with every hx40 blade combination there is other than the 67mm. They don't ever start losing airflow or fall off when you get to your cars "top end". My car recently saw 62 lb/min at 37 psi at 8000 rpm and it climbed the entire way there. It never leveled out or died off and I'm sure if I revved it out more it would have continued to climb.

People say they are restrictive but they have the capability of maxing the airflow curve just like any of the other housings do. They don't make as much power per psi, but they can make just as much power. So in that sense I suppose you could call them "restrictive" but for that matter you could call a .70 "restrictive" if you're referencing a divided t4 setup. Take note of the fact that I hate the .55 housing myself, so im not here preaching how awesome it is, I'm just clearing the mud.
 
I maxed out the HX35 7blade compressor wheel on a T3 setup. I logged 59-61lb/min depending on ambient temps. I believe the best I got on the .55 was about 54-55 lb/min...granted I switched to a SMIM somewhere in there too.

I will say this though. I recently switched to a T3 HX40, and I wouldn't go back to the HX35 for nothing! I lost virtually no streetablility and gained so much more above 6500 and it pulls insane at 36psi.

On a side note, I think we Pm'd in the past about boost tapering off in the upper rpms on the HX35. I kinda got tired of trying to run 36 and it dropping to 30...On the HX40 I've actually crept to 45psi when I had a split in my MBC vac line! When I upgrade my inj, I'll prolly shoot for 40-42 psi and go break something in my drivetrain at the track!:D

Yes now that you say that, I remember speaking with you. I finally got it hold boost til 8500 rpm with no drop. I pretty much parked the dsm and I'm getting the itch again. My goal was 500whp and I'm pretty sure I was close on my last tune but didn't get finished. Stacy and I were retuning then he disappeared.

What do you hate about the .55 HX40? I'm trying to decide between the .55 HX35 for spool, or the .55 HX40 for more power.
 
In my opinion the sacrifice of spool going from a hx35 to a .55 hx40 is not worth the "gain" in airflow. The .55 hx40 has to see 30+ psi before it will outflow nearly any hx35 combination. Its just kind of useless to me because you could have a good spooling hx35 that flows 50lb/min or a worse spooling .55 hx40 that flows the same as the hx35 till high boost which is also when the boost/psi gains become negligible.

What it all boils down to is if you want below 60ish lb/min go with a hx35. If you want 60+ go with a .70 hx40. The only scenario I would recommend the .55 hx40 over any hx35 would be if you went with a billet 56mm hx40. I had that setup with a cyclone mani only revving to 7k and the spool/midrange/torque was phenomenal, though it suffered from the same symptoms I stated above, it needed stupid high boost to outflow hx35's.


Also the spool on the .55 hx40 was pretty heavily dependent on the cold side. My 56mm saw 30 psi by 4200-4500 rpm with the cyclone but my 62mm smim combo saw 30 psi around 5k. Keep that in mind.
