1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse GST

Introduction
Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Joe, and I am from a town north of Birmingham, AL. I have been working on cars, trucks, and motorcycles since I was 12 years old with my Dad. We have dabbled with a little bit of everything, but I have never owned or even pursued an Eclipse....until now. I have always owned Honda's and it's what I am good at and it's pretty much all I know. I have owned several of them over the years, and still own one currently alongside the new project car.

I wasn't even looking for an Eclipse when I came across this one, it just happened. I went to see it and honestly, I am ashamed as to what I spent for this piece of ... but anyways the mistake was made and it's now mine to do something with.

The Beginning
So I drive 3 hours to pick this Eclipse up, and I am pretty excited about it because I know these cars have potential. I have known people with GSX to produce 500 AWHP like it was nothing, and while this one is not AWD it still excites me to know I could one day break into the 500+ club, and maybe I can find a totaled GSX along the way to convert my car?

So I'll give you the goods first, since the bad list outweighs it exponentially.

  • 4G63T - 6 Bolt Swap
  • 255 Walboro
  • 16G Producing 300+ WHP on low boost (fuel cut)
  • Greddy FMIC
  • HKS Cam Gears
  • HKS 272 Cams
  • Apexi SAFC
  • EVO Big Brakes

Well that was a fun list , now let's get to what happened on the way home. The drive was >200 miles. I stayed out of boost the whole way home because a.) I didn't want any failure with no tools b.) I don't know this car yet c.) because I am too cheap to put a ton of gas into the car without looking it over for leaks or anything "hidden".

Long story short, I am nearing the end of my long drive home and get off the exit and naturally , the 16g SHOULD start producing boost around 3k rpm, based on any low gear / low throttle take offs on the way home; however, that was not the case. So I am thinking, well shit a boot blew off, I'll just limp it to the gas station. I get there , nope not the case. I take the lower intercooler pipe and intake off the turbo. What do I see? Oil....EVERYWHERE.

I made the last 3 miles to my moms house keeping it low rpm, running rich as shit, and just driving like hell. I leave it there until the next day knowing my wife's ass is about to leave me.

The Solution?

I do my research on this forum and find out about Forced Performance. I order the FP68HTA, Literally 4 hours after I just dumped way more cash than I will ever admit to anyone. I then order Gram's 750CC injectors because it's what I ran on my Honda and they've always been dang good injectors.

So we would think that would resolve all of my issues; however, lets get to that list now since I got long winded.

  • Cut Stock Springs
  • Stock Shocks
  • EVERY ball joint or grease fitting is flat
  • EVERY bushing is cracked/dry rotted
  • 3 Broke Exhaust Hangers
  • Large Gaping Hole on the TOP of the muffler
  • "Garden Hose" style clamps on IC pipe
  • 6 Bolt swap, literally thrown in and not cleaned up.
  • 3/4 tires mismatched
That's where this begins. The turbo and injectors will be put to the side and I will now begin the process of pulling the 6 bolt swap, fenders, and bumper and start my re-wire/extension of wires and re-routing for a "cleaner appearance"

While I am in the process of that, the engine bay and under neath of the car will get hit with a heated pressure washer so that no old grime/grease remains.

I'd love to tell you I have a ton of pictures, but I don't because to be honest with you I have been so mad about this purchase I have just now got it in my mind that it's time to go to work and salvage this beast from its shady tree past.

Literally, the only 2 photos I own. One was from previous owner, one was from my friend following behind me on the drive home. Stay tuned folks, it's about to get fun.......

Well, I threw a 14b that I had on the car and took it around the neighborhood (literally as far as I drove) one last time until I start correcting some issues. I don't trust this car to even go to the gas station (which is <1 mile from my home) at the moment.

I don't know what it is, but it runs rich then leans all the way back out. Anything over 10psi (even on the 14b and I start to get fuel cut)

Anyways, enjoy the crummy looking DSM. At least one day I'll be able to look back and know I made it somewhere.
