Not sure where to post this question, I apologize if I post it in the wrong area.

Currently my 96 tsi 1g swap has a busted 14b that came with it. Tubo needs to be replaced and as a temp solution I was going to get another 14b from a friend who upgraded. However, I do want bigger and I have no idea what is best or what I should be looking at for an end goal turbo.

This car will be my warm weather daily driver as well as mostly kid friendly (4 yr old son) but I want it to keep up to my husband's mustang that runs 12's at the track.

Well still not sure on your end goal, but good reviews on the 68HTA. Might want to look into it, little bit of lag compared to the older HTA but being FWD may be good for a little lag. I plan on getting this probably end of summer for my winter turn around.

16g's will get you their but if you hubby upgrades you may not have enough room with a 16g. I personally want more then 300-350whp so 68hta is my root if I may say.

Evo 3 16g, ported o2 housing and ported 2g manifold. Supporting mods. Being fwd you will need a good suspension and pair of slicks or at least radials, if your actually wanting 12 sec passes at the track.

I located a TDO4HL and from what I have read it's the same as what came on my car, correct me if I'm wrong please.

Now, it's sat for at least 5 years.. what should I offer for it and how do I tell if it's still in good condtion? Or, should I not even bother with it?

I wouldn't bother. That's a smaller turbo then the 14b, I believe those came on the Conquest but I'm not 100% sure. I would hold on until you come across a good 16g, 18g, or 20g. IMO if you want to get into the 12's and want a fun street car, go with the 16g + E85. Granted, you will need some more serious supporting mods to do it but it's worth every penny.

Also, please take the time to search the forums as most of the questions you are asking have been answered previously but we are here to help if you can't find something.

Well considering you're FWD with a build motor already I would say go with a Holset HY-35 in the BEP housing and bolt it to an FP race manifold. This can be done fairly inexpensively if you know where to look. The little extra lag with help with traction a bit. With that turbo and supporting mods you could get Pretty deep 11's if you can drive well and keep traction. Radials would be nice. I'd look into some wheels and some M&H Racemasters.
You'll want DSMLink at least V3 lite if not then V3. You'll need a bigger fuel pump with a rewire kit if you plan on making your desired power level. I'd look at a Walbro 255 or 450 pump. Access to E85 would be nice. If you do have access then you'll want your injectors to be E85 compatible especially if the car is going to sit at all. At least 850cc injectors. you'll need an AFPR to go with the bigger pump; aeromotive and fuel lab are popular choices. Some more aggressive cams would be a good idea. Even stock 1G turbo cams would help. A boost controller if you dont have one. You need at a minimum a boost gauge and wideband gauge. The Innovate MTX-L is a great option for wideband. You'll need similar supporting mods to these if you want to run a 20g or even 16g at higher boost levels so might as well do a one and done sort of deal.

The car that originally came on your car was the T-25. It was replaced with a TD05 14B. The TD04HL came on the RVR, some volvos and an older WRX IIRC.

I apologize for duplicating questions but sadly I was unable to locate information as quickly as I needed to. I am trying to locate the parts I require as promptly as I can. As of last night assembly has been started.

My initial post was regarding what turbo to purchase. But I added a post because I had located a turbo and wanted to know if it was worth buying. Seems it's not, so I'm back to needing a turbo again.

The TD04HL doesn't exactly represent what is under the compressor cover or in the exhaust turbine housing, however it is highly likely to be a downgrade. The TD04HL is what comes on a lot of the imported engines that we get here in the U.S. Generally, they come from something like a Mitsubishi RVR or something of that nature. After doing my research, I found that the TD04HL I had in my possession was a 13T.

13G -> 13T -> 14B -> 16G....

It's not a very sought after unit and would be a downgrade from a 14b.

Can anyone tell me why this exhaust housing is cracked?

It is pretty common on the 14b and cheap aftermarket turbine housings. Metal quality, design, heat, and time are contributing factors to cracking.

Nope not "cosmetic", if you can get a refund, do it. Otherwise since you're in the market for a new turbo, I'd recommend an Evo 3 16g, its an easy swap. Other wise 20g, or hx35 would be good choices as well.

Here is another Crack in the waste gate, I have tried to return the part but the person doesn't seem to want to work with me. Keeps telling me it worked just fine on his car and there isn't any reason why it won't work on mine.

So I guess it's time to locate parts and or use my old ebay stuff the car came with :-/

Dam that sucks. I'm kinda in the same boat, was sold a "good" HX40 and tube manifold about 6 months ago. I had a oil filter loosen up on my car and I had to shut it down immediately but I hurt my HX40, so I spent a few hours removing and replacing it with my "good" spare only to find out IMMEDIATELY that its seals are gone and I was smoking like a mosquito fogger....so now back to R&R but I need Justin to rebuild one (both if I can afford it) so my ride is down and it was sooo nice out this weekend that I really wanted to drive her. I guess there will be other days. I feel for ya!
