So, i let my friend drive my car Saturday night. He was trying to have a little fun and overreved the shite out of it, missed a gear and literally grenaded the pressure plate, which took out my bellhousing, fp intake pipe and the fp red turbo too cause the intake pipe bits went you know where. Couple pics below. Sad thing is this would have been a relatively cheap fix had i installed a scattershield, but now I need a new turbo, amongst other things. Never let a Honda guy drive your car!

.. he better be paying for all the replacement parts + your labour. This probably belongs in Hangout since its not tech related at all.

That's a bummer

I agree that your "freind"should help you cover the costs. Every time I've driven a freinds vehicle and something went out, I've paid at least partial costs, even when it was something we both knew was going to go out eventually.

Hopefully you can get it back together soon.

what was your rev limiter set at? what kind of flywheel?

I concur. Rev limit? Flywheel? PP? Disc? Age? It sucks man, but it could have been much worse. Look for the old video of the GVR4 that blew up a stock flywheel at the track. bad-news.com

Wasnt the flywheel, the Pressure plate friction surface exploded. ACT Streetlite flywheel and the XTD 6 puck clutch. Ive never launched it on the XTD even once and its only around six months old if I recall correctly. 8500 RPM rev limit. Ive seen flywheels blow, its downright scary. Ive got a brand new Southbend SSX/ full ceramic laying in my closet that will be going in. The XTD was only supposed to be temporary cheap fix for when the Southbend I had installed previously died.
He was driving my car like an idiot, got shit really friggin hot. Im surprised the clutch didnt just start slipping cause it couldnt handle NLTS shifting, only pulls which is why I never launched the car or went to the track with it.
In any case, lesson learned and I will definitely put a scatter shield on this time cause It would have saved my turbo and intake.

No kidding. Your success with it is the reason i put it in as a temp solution but i left it in there cause it was working fine for daily driving and even pulls. I even dynoed the car with it. Ive spun the wheels in the wet, gotten sideways playing and shifted real fast with it and it always held fine. Ive never launched with it either which is what i figured would be the most damaging but since it wouldnt hold an nlts shift i never even bothered a launch.

Damn that really sucks! Some friends are better then others when it comes to treating your stuff with respect but it's best to avoid it all together.

Not sure. The thermostat housing was shattered too and the maf was no longer connected to the turbo and it wont run like that.. Valvetrain was built well, so i hope not. I shift it a tick past 8k and its always been fine and still makes power there.

Pulled the valve cover, no tossed rockers. Bogus SVO came over and did a leakdown test, and the most leakage was less than 10%, so thats good. Ive been repairing things as I go. Fixed the intake pipe, wires and got a new upper and lower thermosstat housing all blasted, painted and ready to go on. Also fixed some hoses and fixing the radiator today.

Its coming along. Slowly. This is a stage 4 TRE trans, with all EVO III gears, so I really dont want to mess it up. After cleaning and painting the donor bellhousing, the paint didnt match the rest of the case, so I had to paint the rest too. Lots of friggin prep and cleaning. Now that Ive got everything swapped over, its time for the dreaded shimming. Looks like the only one Im not going to have to crush solder for is the center dif, since both of its races live in the second and third parts of the case.

That's crazy the PP came apart but be glad it was just your pressure plate, those flywheels are a buzzsaw. A local guy had his flywheel come apart mid track and didn't have a scatter shield, the thing destroyed his engine bay.

Im so glad it wasnt the flywheel, id have to junk the car which would suck cause i rebuilt it from the ground up. I saw a video a while back of a CRX at the track and when the flywheel blew, the entire front end of the car just went bye bye! Im going to make a scatter shield for mine cause im kind of leary of this happening again. Bogus SVO came over when i pulled the transmission and hes seen this sort of thing before and said Will just got the clutch way too hot slipping and side stepping the crap out of it. I definitely dont ever want to do this again!

Yea, I've seen that video too titled "When V-TECH kicks in..." LOL

Sucks but it could have been much much worse, glad to see you're getting to work though. Looks like you've almost got it back together.

I was about 2 blocks away when it happened. Ive got it all back together now, and the transmission shifts great still. Turbo center section came in today, so after work, Ill get a side by side picture to compare the damaged vs new comp wheel.
