hello, I'm looking at getting a head gasket and was looking at the cometic but it only comes in 85.5. Also come in 1.3 and 1.6. I have stock size of 85. Will the cometic work?
Also found a Mitsubishi mls head gasket 4 layer. Which would you prefer or if there is a better one that would work with stock 85mm

Also do the head and block have to be surfaced?
Thanks

The block will not normally warp so you don't need to surface it(although i'd go over it with emery cloth wrapped around a flat long file to get any imperfections). The head is what warps so take it to a local machine shop and they will do it for somewhere around $80. These two steps are VERY IMPORTANT if you are going the MLS route as its just multiple layers of steel hence the name. But the cosmetic is a little more friendly on how perfect the surface is. You will hear different things from different people on which is better so if i was you i'd search around and find out what you'd like more.

Make sure you get head studs if you don't already have them.

Many people, myself included, have have had great success with the standard mitsu composite.Saves on machining if not nessesary and can take the power of most typical dsm builds. GSXvsTSI is correct about the headstuds, they will be necessary for whatever gasket you choose if you plan to make good power.

Both block and head surfaces should be resurfaced to properly run an mls head gasket. While different people may say different things, Cometic has specific guidelines to run their mls head gasket.

This is the required RA finish from Cometic:

What surface finish is required to us an MLS head gasket?
A surface finish of 50 RA (roughness average) or finer, is recommended for a proper gasket seal. Anything rougher may conflict with the gasket design.

1.3mm is the OE thickness. You need to consider how much was/has already been machined from the head/block before determining which one to run.

The block most certainly can "warp". I have seen the factory block deck be out by as much as .014". In order for a Cometic to seal properly both the head and block need to be resurfaced. If you're not able or willing to do both then your option would be to use a composite as someone stated.

The Cometic is available in an 85.5 mm and 86mm bore size for a 6 bolt. It's also available in 85mm or 86mm for a 7 bolt so either way you are covered. We're direct with Cometic and can get you hooked up with the right gasket if you need. If you have any questions give me a shout at the shop 410-859-3269 and I'll help get you going.

The block can warp yes and if it is get it surfaced! Check it and if it isn't and you don't want to pull the engine to surface it id just do what i said before. Especially if your not planning on going over 27psi. Spend your time and money as you'd wish though.
