Hello, my names chris. I just picked up a 97 spyder gst. It is basically stock as far as I can tell, except for the exhaust and it has some type of aftermarket air filter and filter piping that goes to turbo. The car is otherwise unmolested and seems to run great. This is my first dsm, however, my friend had a talon tsi a long time ago that got me interested in them. This one came up for sale for a decent price for the condition and I jumped on it. I look forward to starting on the stage 0 mods soon and maybe even some of the stage one mods listed in the how to.

Nice man and welcome to tuners. Any pics yet? Would love to see her/him. :thumb:

I'm sure you know but maintenance is major. If your not sure when timing belt has been changed last I would di it now. As 60k is when they need to be changed and if they can't prove it's done I would. :idontknow:

Good luck with the car, a lot of info here. I use google for everything and put DSM at the end and it takes me here and my question is answered. :hellyeah:

Wow that was quick. Thanks for the heads up about the timing belt. I have read the regular maintenance thread, and plan on doing a new timing belt soon. Is there any threads on here that detail the timing belt replacement. I also need to do atleast valve cover gasket as it has a slight leak there, and possibly a leak at or near the oil pan as when I got under it at the car lot, I saw a drip on the pan.

Nice 900rr, I have a 97 900rr as well. Nice taste in bikes and cars.

thanks. Doesn't seem too bad. I will will have to do the replacement soon as I don't know how old it is.

You could consider replacing the coolant hoses if they appear original while you're doing the timing belt. Mine started letting go at about 111,000. It does take some of the Russian roulette fun out of driving though:rolleyes:. There's a vendor on this site OHM that's taking orders for a group buy right now. There are probably others too if you look. Make sure you get the small hoses too! Welcome to the site!
PS get a 1g bov or an Evo 9 bov(direct fit) if yours is stock. And make a boost leak tester and fix your leaks!

I believe the bov is stock. It is plastic and looks like its recirculated in to the air filter intake housing. Even though, it is recirculated, you can still hear it make a psssh sound though. Not sure if something was modded to make this happen or what.

There is a plastic pipe in the air hose that some people that like noise cut shorter for more Psssh. The plastic bovs on 2g's are known to leak/not hold boost. You should feel a real difference with one of the ones I mentioned. I went for the Evo9 version as it didn't need a flange adapter and it was new so I didn't have to worry about that. I'm not supposed to tell you to do a search, but I'm older and bad at hyperlinks, so search for how to make a boost leak tester. You will be happy you did. Nice find on that car!

is there an easy way to tell if tgetg cut the plastic pipe shorter? So should I look for a stock evo9 bov or will any aftermarket made for an ev0 9 should bolt right on?

Pull the rubber tube that connects the maf to the turbo. If the part that runs from the bov extends into the tube it wasn't cut.
Stock evo9 or X bov/bpv as long as it's the all aluminum one. There's a couple people selling them on classifieds right now.

Either one is good and an upgrade from the 2g stock one. No one was selling the 1g's when I was looking and I hadn't learned to just ask everyone for what I wanted. Also you need an adapter for the 1g, they're pretty cheap though.

just did a boost leak test on the car the other day. It won't even hold 5 psi. As soon as I started pumping air in it leaks back out through the stock BOV. The piece of junk bov won't even hold 5 psi of pressure. I guess this is why I get a flat spot in my acceleration when I punch it? Wished there was a way to mod the piece of junk to hold pressure or clean it or something until I can find a 1g bov or something else.

I don't know if it count's for anything, but I'm building a '99 GSX and have stock 2g bypass valve if you want it, and I'm close to York. York Haven.

I highly recommend the EVO MR bypass valve. It is a direct replacement, unlike the 1g, which requires an adapter. It is an absolute stock setup. All 2g OE bypass valves leak.
Here is the 2g:

It is great that you are concerned with maintenance items before adding power. Thank you for checking out the maintenance section. Completing the general maintenance will make your ownership much more enjoyable. After you install a new bypass valve, pressure test the system again to check for other leaks with particular attention to throttle body seals and fuel injector seals. Don't forget to add fresh fluids to the transaxle and flush the clutch/brake system. Many don't think about it, but a compression test will give you an idea of the general health of the motor.

My first DSM was an '86 Technica, then an 88 ESi, then another 88 ESi, then an 89 TSi. (all old school)
My first "real" DSM was a black 99 GSX, which I only drove for 5000 miles, and sold it. Then 4 years later I bought a '96 TSi... and now, after it rotting out, I'm building a '99 GSX. And since I'm local to the OP, I wouldn't mind meeting up somewhere, and giving him a working 2g BOV.

Since I have access to a few shops, I wouldn't mind assisting w/a timing belt job. We have a local Mitsubishi Dealership within minutes of eachother, so getting the timing components wouldn't be hard. I also have a set of ARP head studs. Anyhow, how much coin does an EVO bypass valve run now-a-days?

$40-65 shipped in used condition. If you want advice on parts for your timing belt job, feel free to search the site, or PM me. I am happy to help.
