Hey, so I have a problem and I'm kind of stumped.
My car is a 98 Spyder GST 2.0l with a 16g Turbo. 123,764 miles.
When I am driving the car, the RPMs seem to max out prematurely and then the car acts like it's misfiring (it's not). In first gear, I can get to 4,000rpm, second gear it's 3,500, third gear is 3,500 but 4th and 5th gear won't let me go past 2,500-3,000 rpm. This is troublesome on the highway and if I feather the throttle, sometimes it lets me hit 90mph in 5th gear at 4,000 rpm, but mostly it is almost like hitting a rev limiter at 2,500rpm. It doesn't buck or backfire, but it feels like the car has no power and even at WOT it will not accelerate unless I play with the gas pedal.
Checked the plugs and wires and coil pack, they're sparking but the wires look very old and are 7mm so I went ahead and ordered new plugs and thicker wires just for peace of mind as I just bought the car.
Car is getting fuel and drives great until the higher rpms.
The boost gauge holds boost and even at WOT the turbo spools and will build pressure until maxed out on the gauge, so I don't think it's a boost leak and there are no vacuum leaks anywhere.
The only thing I *THINK* it could be is that I know the car needs a new throttle position sensor. I've played with it a bit but adjusting it hasn't fixed the problem so I know that I'm going to need a new one. I searched every junkyard and couldn't find one so I'm gonna get one off ebay because they're crazy expensive at the part stores around here. It was my impression that the TPS really only caused problems at idle OR that if it was the culprit it would limit revs even out of gear. This will get to redline when the car is not in gear. Could the TPS be causing these problems?
Any and all help is appreciated. The car has a few mods and I've done all other maintenance. Once I get this taken care of I'm going to go ahead and do the timing belt, water pump, tensioners, all other belts and make sure everything is 100% up to date and then continue modding it. But I'd like to address this before doing all of that work.
