Howdy DSMTuners,
New to the forums here but on my second Talon. I had a 92.5 1g years ago but ran across a 98 TSi awd with a blown head gasket for $800. I have attached some pictures of the short block & head and wanted to get some opinions. I may be opening the flood gates but I'm hoping to get some good advice. Piston #1 looks a little shady but there are no cracks. My intentions, based on the craigslist ad, was to expect obvious damage that would warrant a rebuild of the bottom end. I am now considering to put everything back together with an OEM head gasket and see what happens, unless anyone here can point out reasons not to. The previous owner believes that the waste gate got hung up on the fan causing 35+lbs of boost when it typically ran 23lbs.

The car currently has the modifications below:
16g - possibly ebay, not sure how to tell
255 walbro
880 Defi injectors
ARP head studs
GM MAF w/ translator
FMIC w solid piping and aftermarket bov
Tubular exhaust manifold
Full 3" exhaust
Giant F&F Tach :cool::cool::cool:

Let me know what you guys think.

There are 165,000 miles on the car.

I considered using it because no one had told me it was toast. That was the kind of advice/opinion I came here looking for since I don't work with motors on the daily.

Thanks for the advice.

That's what I'm thinking. Real Street Performance has a 10% sale through black Friday. I currently have the items below in my shopping cart and I'm going to hold out until Friday just in case there are other suppliers that have better deals this week.

-Wiseco 8.5:1 Pistons and Eagle Rods combo kit w ARP rod bolts
-Cometic bottom end gasket kit
-ACL main and rod race bearings

The total is $930 and some change so far. I'm going to do some more digging this evening to see what else is recommended for a rebuild. Please throw recommendations my way about what I have listed above and let me know if there is anything that I should stay away from.

Long term hp goals would be no more than 600.

Thanks

I can match those prices as part of our Black Friday/Cyber Monday special. Only difference would be King XP bearings in place of the ACL's.

Looks like you have a good setup going. There's a lot of different bearings out there that are tried and true. I personally chose tri-metal bearings for my build. If you're looking to get machining done as well I'd message Jackson and see what kind of bundle they could whip up for you.

I've been talking to Tony from Jackson Machine. He really twisted my arm pretty hard and made me go with a stage 1, 2.3 stroker, assembled short block. He's giving me a great deal so now I just have to pull the block and send it his way. Thanks for pointing me in that direction guys!

You had me at better torque and wider powerband my friend. I'm really happy to have it professionally assembled too.

I should have an engine stand tomorrow and everything broke down and ready for a Friday pick up. I will call you on Thursday to let you know for sure.

Thanks again.

I have some questions for jackson machine.

I went through a local machine shop when I was doing my rebuild. I called atleast five other " machine" shops, only to find none of them actually do engine machine work. They all recommended the shop I went through.

I had the deck milled , hot tank, and bored .020 over for the 2g piston/1g rod combo I had. The shop guy said they milled the deck .005, and it was NOT belt finished. They had a brand new mill and it did look great.

But then he called me and said the crank shaft had to be turned. They didn't do it at their shop, and he sent down a shop he uses in Phoenix and he specialized in cranks.
I ordered new acl .010 oversized bearings , and he assembled the short block for me. Everything has been great so far. I have great oil pressure, zero vibrations even with poly mounts. What really is so bad about having a crank turned? I know some guys have talked about how it removes the coating on the journals, what is the coating that mitsu used? Does it physically change the surface hardness of the crank shaft?

Well my friend congratulations on your dsm purchase. You are in the right place for starters the forum is full of valuable information to put you in the right in the direction you need to be in for sure!

I agree with the statement that your oil port on the bottom of your head looks very shallow. I would recommend doing the oil port mod or having your machine shop do it while it is there.
