So I have a 1995 GST, I had to replace a head gasket so I went ahead and put a new timing kit since it needed one pretty bad, well I got it timed back but now it won't start, it almost starts then just stops, I've already checked and its not hitting any valves and I set everything back to the way it should be and still nothing.
 
I'll check again, the timing marks should be dead on, is there a better way to make sure they are exactly where they need to be?
 
Everything is plugged in, nothing loose or cracked and the timing marks are lined up perfect, the marks are dead on
 
I'm guessing the car ran before u put a head gasket on it? Id do a compression test to make sure cars in time then I'd move on to seeing If u got spark and fuel car either don't got fuel compression or spark
 
was the head checked for warpage before you reinstalled? Check compression to see if any cylinders are low, if so the heads most likely warped. Also did you use new head studs? Are you sure the plug wires are in the correct order.
 
When it stops, does it lock up? will it turn over consistently, or does it have "hard spots"? Sounding like either something wrong with the timing or the firing order is wrong. Either that or one of the cylinders is a swimming pool and you're hydrolocking... More info please...
 
It has hard spots, I bought new head bolts, the wires are in the correct order, and when we timed it all the marks lined up.
 
Okay so I believe I found the problem, one wire came loose, re connected it and it smoothed, but then started flooding, checked the plugs again and getting no spark, brand new plugs and wires, the only thing that's not completely new is the coils, so I'm gonna test the coils again tomorrow and see if there bad, the the hard spot was it would turn over then kick back, turned out to be flooding, could someone let me the best way to test the coils?
 
I forgot to add, the car started up, ran perfect with no problems, then when I shut it off to go run out for food, came back and there was no spark what so ever, I called my brother and he said something about the ignition fuse, might be a stupid question but is it possible that the ignition fuse went out?
 
Doubt your coils went bad suddenly. You still have a connection or wire issue somewhere. Could also beca transistor issue under heat. Ive seen them run when cold then fail once they heat up. Difficult to diagnose.
 
Well the engine ran prior to changing the headgasket. Double check your timing.... Make sure your plug wires are in the correct orientation and all your ignition wires are plugged in. Doesnt sound like a compression issue to me
 
Its just not getting any spark, and the chances of both coils going out at the same time don't sound right,, the timing is where it needs to be, its just flooding because of no spark, I'll check all my wires just to make sure there's not an issue with connection.
 
Double check grounds and test the CAS (Cam Angle Sensor). If you had the head off, especially if you've done work to the head, they can get bumped around and it may have gotten touched in the no-no spot. If you're using a 1G CAS, you may need to adjust it again or it may be installed 180* out of phase (Done that before. Cue carnival music...). Double check the ignition timing with a timing light. You should be around 5* BTDC (Before Top Dead Center) +/- 3*. When you check for BASE timing, make sure to jump the timing connector or you're not checking base timing. Double check for corrosion in the plugs for the coil packs. The other concern I have is that there needs to be one heck of a lot of fuel in the cylinders to create a kickback due to hydrolocking. Once you get the issue taken care of, do an oil change to remove any fuel that may have washed past the pistons into the oil pan and change your plugs. Also, while checking for spark, make sure to disable the fuel pump or you'll just be exacerbating the flooding problem. Hope this helps man...
