The other night was running wot (briefly while merging onto highway) and then in 5th gear car would not go at all but engine would rev so it appeared tranny had broke or something. Tried all gears and car wouldn't move at all and engine would rev as if car was in neutral and clutch pedal felt normal. But after a few minutes I had all gears back and drove completely normal like nothing was wrong until later at highway speeds it happened again and after a few minutes everything was ok once more. Drove many miles after that on highway + around town and didn't detect ANY problems. Does that sound like a clutch going bad? It is close to 6 yrs old now but last time clutch went out it gradually slipped until it got real bad and not like this where it went from normal to not grabbing at all and then back to normal. Any thoughts?

Clutch felt alright when the problem was occurring and continued to feel good after problem went away.

Did anything happen in the last week. This sounds internal. A clutch wont completely let go then grab again. When the car wont move what did you do? If clutch were still working you would still have to push it in to go into first gear. If clutch broke tranny isnt moving at all when car is sitting still so you could shift through gears at will. Its the same as if motor were off. Broken center diff is a possibility.

Found out tonight it's most likely not transmission related. What's happening is when driving car real good the engine dies out completely and cannot be restarted except after waiting a few moments up to a few minutes. After restarting car goes good if driving conservatively but eventually cuts off completely again if driving it harder. So it's like something is kind of heating up making engine die but not sure what it is yet. Can a fuel pump on it's way out act that way? I'm going to swap in my spare ecu to see if that's it.

I don't want to change fuel pump unless I'm certain it is on it's way out. A little hard to know if problem is intermittent though, right? I'll swap ecu to see if that does it but yeah just seen somewhere else too describing symptoms of failing FP which match my problem.

FWD.

Seen write-ups but how hard is it really to replace it? What fuel pump do I buy? Car is free/cheap modded and will never see over 15 lbs boost . (Already did FP rewire but not sure if it was necessary for 14-15 lbs boost).

It's a 1/2 hour to 1 hour job. Lift the back of the car, disconnect pump electrical connector empty the tank and take tank plug out (it holds the pump down as well), loosen the tank straps, disconnect fuel line from pump unit, unscrew 8 (I think) bolts holding the unit to the tank, take the unit out. Replace the unit. Reverse steps dope before.

Ok thanks, it doesn't sound too bad.

What fuel pump to get for stock 1g turbo?

I installed an EVO 8 used one, it's quiet and more than sufficient for a stock setup like mine. It's sized like a walbro (smaller than the stocker) so it's not a direct fit for a 1g FWD but nothing a couple of worm clamps can not take care of.

I seen a thread where somone was saying on 1g fwd you don't need to drop tank at all or even droop axle to get pump out. That if you twist and manuever pump around a little it will come out. Anyone else hear that?

the Axle doesn't need to be dropped, dropping the tank makes the whole thing a lot easier and it's only two nuts that need loosen up...

By smaller do mean shorter? If so is it that you're adding a short section of fuel line hose and clamping it in? I never changed a fuel pump before..

Ok I see what you mean now.

With a higher flow pump do you have to worry about fuel pressure differences or anything? I don't have anything to monitor what's going on.

Definitely want a quieter fp like stock and considering getting a used one too. What are good options, I know you mentioned evo 8 already. Actually, are there any good decent priced and quieter new ones available? Auto parts stores are showing well over $100 for stock replacements..

A good used EVO 8 should just bring back some of the muscles lost on a 20+ years old stocker. The risk is to overrun the stock FPR and run rich. Not that many options really.

Thanks for the link!

I seen Walbro's in general are known to be a little noisy but also read 190's are supposedly not that bad. Anyone using a 190 and comment on how they sound in 1g dsm's? Stock pumps are very quiet and changing to anything noisy at all would bother me.

I have a 255 and its not terrible. Driving around with a 3" exhaust I dont even hear it.

I've heard Evo 8 and 9 pumps are quiet. I have an Evo 9 but I'm two weeks away from installation.

New fuel pumps come with wiring and o-rings, instructions, etc. If buying used what about those?

My 255 and my 340 pumps are barely noticeable in my car, but like Chump, I have 3" exhaust AND an electric dump so my ears are probably not good with the car running. Even when I turn on the pump in LINK, it isn't very noisy but you would have to have a AFPR if you ran either of those. The 190 I have never ran but wouldn't think it to be any different.

Probably going to buy a used stock FP for 20 bux since I'm on a budget and no plans on going past 15 lbs boost right now. The one I'm getting is from '90 AWD and my car is '93 FWD. Pump is exactly the same though, right? Is there an o-ring or washers that need replacing on install? Does anyone sell those or just go to home depot and match them up? Do you replace the filter/strainer too and if so is there a stock replacement or can you use one, for example, for a Walbro? Any other gaskets or small parts need replacing at that time too?
