My '99 GSX is dying a slow and painful death. Made more difficult since I am not a mechanic...

The latest (most serious) problem is exhaust leak(s). Just today started sounding loud as hell. Took it to local garage just down the street that I use for minor things...they are saying some part of exhaust needs to be replaced (I'm not sure exactly what but I think it is just part of the pipe after the mid-exhaust area, including probably the muffler as well), but when I asked for estimate they were unable to find the parts they thought they would need from any of their suppliers. They are still looking into it but I am not hopeful.

In the past I have used JNZ Tuning for major repairs (transmission rebuild, clutch, timing chain, new downpipe + cat, alternator, other stuff including fixing things other shops screwed up), but talking to Josh he said they are too busy/backed up and cannot work on my car, nor can he give me any clues as to where to get exhaust parts, saying that they are like impossible to find anymore (????).

Note that JNZ replaced my downpipe + cat about 3 years ago. They were going to replace the downpipe with 3" & I was thinking of getting some kind of new complete cat-back upgrade for the rest but as it turned out at the last minute they could not even get the 3" pipe, and I had to settle for a simple 2" replacement as I could not keep running the car the way it was, needed i fixed asap, it was so bad...and I just stopped at that due to $$ anyways.

Any suggestions for either resources for exhaust parts, or garages in suburban Philadelphia area that might be able to fix this? Unfortunately I don't have a lot of $ to spend on this either, am just trying to keep car running as long as possible on the cheap.

Thanks.

Here are a couple of suggestions:
  • Being on a budget, I would suggest creating a WTB ad on your local regional forum found on the red bar at the top of this site.

  • I would also search CL in your area for used aftermarket exhaust systems. I have had great success doing this for cat-back systems.

  • If you insist on a new system, you may want to go with a Megan Racing down pipe and SRS cat-back. These are popular choices for members on a budget.
To further decrease your out-of-pocket cost, try this install yourself. Basic hand tools are all that is needed for install. Removal will likely take up a bulk of your time. PB blaster, lithium grease, and a reciprocating saw are probably going to be needed to remove your stock exhaust. f you decide to try it, let me know, and I would be happy to share some tips.

Unfortunately this is not anything I can tackle myself (pathetic but true). Not only do I not have tools or expertise, but I don't even have a garage to use to work on the car if I did. I'd have to work in the street or a parking lot. And for health reasons I'm not up to crawling all over the place under a car mounted on jacks/stands anyway.

My local garage was supposed to call me back with hopefully more info yesterday but they never did and are now closed until Tuesday...sigh... In the meantime I called another garage today to try at least to find out EXACTLY what part of the exhaust needs replaced so I can explore my options as far as posting an ad here to get parts, look on CL etc, assuming they tell me they can't do this because they can't get parts either. I got an appt to have them look at the car on Tuesday. Step 1 is to find out what exactly is needed.

If a cat-back piece to replace the whole exhaust would fix the current problem I'd imagine it shouldn't be too difficult for a garage to do but I don't know for sure yet if that would work. My past experiences with car repairs like this, working on things with friends, is that there are always various "gotchas" that come up.
