The door sensor thing on my driver side door is broken. The car thinks that the door is always closed (dome light does not come on if door is opened, bell reminder if I leave headlights on doesn't ring when I open the door etc etc etc).

How difficult is it to replace this/how do I do it? Any gotchas I need to know about? Also any replacement part info suggestions?

Any clues appreciated. I did try searching on "door sensor" and "door switch" but could not find anything useful.

Thanks!

You could give Jnztuning a call and get it from them. It's called a door jamb switch, I would do what yomero said first before you buy

Ughhh, any suggestions for how to "unfreeze" the screw that holds this thing in? Mine is totally locked, cannot move it at all despite trying multiple philips screwdrivers with slightly different heads and blasting it with WD40 as best I can.

If I cut off all the rubber shroud piece, might that unshroud the sides of the screw enough so I can try to get a grip on it with pliers and loosen it up that way?

try to use a nut driver 'wrench' if that makes any sense. You will be able to get much more torque on it compared to a standard screwdriver handle. (think of a socket wrench/ratchet with a head that can accept a screwdriver bit)

Another option is a drill... (just be careful to get the right size Philips bit for this)

Hand-held impact driver like the one in the video below:

These are helpful when dissembling the screws on the TB.

Just wondering - is JNZ still operating? In the past they did a lot of good work on my car, plus I have bought various parts from them, but last December when I called/emailed them several times they never got back to me (so I gave up). I tried them again this past Monday in relation to this door part plus I want to see if they can take a look at my clutch pedal, but so far no replies to either emails or voicemails this time either.

Last time i called i think they were on vacation, because i got there voicemail. I would say keep trying them or just go on there website and look in there oem section

Thanks again for that link & the part #. Ended up buying the part from an OEM seller on ebay for a couple bucks cheaper.

I've given up on JNZ, they still haven't replied to any emails or voicemails I've sent/left in the past 2 weeks (or from last December either btw). Hope they are not out of business but don't know what to think.

Still can't get the damn screw out (tried multiple things), so ordered a cheap hand impact driver also, hopefully that will do the trick.

If I remember correctly, it's a sheet metal screw, so you can just drill into the head until it falls off. Then just pull the switch over the screw. Now use PB blaster or similar and vise grips on the rest of the screw....or then just drill out the rest of it. Once the screw is out, it takes 2 minutes to replace the switch. I did both of mine a few months ago.

Thanks, I may try that if the impact driver doesn't work.

I just want to correct myself on this in case someone reads this thread - JNZ is still around. I am having problems with my exhaust now and local shop thus far has been unable to get/find replacement parts. Out of desperation I called JNZ - to my amazement Josh answered the phone. Sounds like they are crazy busy - I asked if he could take a look/work on this but he said they are too booked to take on any more work. As far as trying to get the parts he couldn't help me there either unfortunately. Sigh. I will start another thread on that, looking for help where I can find exhaust pieces for my '99 GSX.

That's becoming more of a problem everyday. I've gotten OEM parts from JNZ for years now. Josh was telling me how so many parts are being discontinued.

Yeah, I guess this was inevitable. Our cars are crossing into "vintage territory" and I guess not enough demand for continued parts to be made, old stock now being depleted etc.

Huge bummer for me as I may not be able to get my latest exhaust problem fixed and have to junk the car, but on the bright side I guess it increases value for folks selling their cars/parting them out.

For this reason i may go buy another complete 95 awd auto. It got a little spooky when i was hunting for some parts and found out they are really getting rare. We still have a lot of "JDM" trannies out there that can be harvested for internals, that's a good thing i suppose. Want a new gas tank filler neck though? No way. JNZ had to tell me some parts were simply not made anymore and the warehouses were depleted of stock.

If the dsm community started out differently.......just honestly wasn't so cheap? We would have parts for the next 30 years just like all the old muscle cars. The dsm was a kids car. I knew when i was a kid i had no money and didn't know how to do one thing the right way mechanically. Dsms: Turning ordinary kids into mechanics since 1989 LOL. My buddy/Builder told me that one the other day and it's so true.

Let OP start a new thread guys. The last four posts are not related to the issue at hand (door sensor).

Sorry about going off topic, I did start a thread on the exhaust issue either yesterday or day before. No responses there yet.

Back on topic about the door sensor, I just fixed it (thanks to all the advice up here)!

Got the impact driver in the mail yesterday, and it did the trick! Was able to get that screw out and pop the new sensor in no problem. Works fine.

Old sensor seems broken, no cleaning would have mattered. New one (& the one in the other door that works) make a distinctive clicking noise when pressed in which the old one does not, and doesn't "feel" right either.

Wish I had known about impact screwdrivers years ago. Have had similar problems with screws (not just on car) that were huge hassles that this baby would have fixed in like 2 seconds :)
