Good evening everybody. So here is the latest of the never ending projects with my 97 gsx. I noticed one day i was pushing coolant to my overflow and i was leaking antifreeze so i knew the headgasket was no good. When i bought the car, the seller included another complete head (BC Cams, retainers, springs, SS valves) so I figured, hey this would be the perfect time to do this. So i did....

Before i started the job i want to mention that the car ran great, i actually pulled it into my garage. I did the usual timing belt stuff, TDC the motor/head, all that good stuff. I put the new head on the car, put the new timing belt/ tensioner, and kept all of the timing marks on point. I pulled the pin, did 6 complete rotations, grabbed something to drink and came back, everything still was in line....

I finally put everything back together, and here comes the moment of truth. I crank the motor and the car never turns o. I checked my wires/ spark plugs and everything looked good. I checked all the sensors i unplugged and everything was plugged in. Which leads me to believe i maybe did not put the Cam angle sensor correctly in the new head? The car just cranks and stays cranking strong, but never starts. My FPR shows pressure, so fuel isnt the issue. Does anyone have an idea on what this might be?

P.S - I checked the timing marks so many times, thats its embedded in my brain. Everything was in line.

There is a proper way it goes in and you can check to see by the little lines that line up. Or just flip and see what Happens, what's the worst that can happen it won't start or it will LOL.

Go check the plugs again and I mean look at the harness and make sure you have the right plug. If I recall the ac and crank sensor are identical and could be swapped.

The new head you installed, Did you have to swap the HLAs and followers over from the old head?

If yes, Did you bleed the HLAs down?

Alright guys, thanks for all the useful information. The HLA were bled down. Last week i swapped the ac/crank sensor plugs and that helped, but the car would bog and not start So yesterday i was on a journey to have this car start. I probably tested everything possible. Compression was 180 through all the cylinders and spark was present. I come to find out the CAS (the part where it bolts into the cam) was no good. Luckily my brother had a spare and put it in, no good. Took apart the timing belt to see if it was that, still nothing. I was defeated until today...

I find a post on this board that says "How to Diagnose a No Start". There is a section in that thread that talks about running a 95 ECU with a non 95-96 cam sensor and that the wires should be arranged in a different order than stock. I rearranged the wires and bam, the car turns on! Im still in quite a shock right now as to this had me baffled but the car turned on, and pretty fast to! However, now my water pump is leaking and i have to revisit this again, but i appreciate everyones help.

I'm would guess you have link. You would have found that info in the install instructions. If that isn't the reason you're running a 95 96 ecu then you learned a valuable lesson about assumption.
