Hey guys I need some help here as I'm trying to prepare my car for sale having a Dsm has been a huge headache and I wanna work my way into something new. So my problem I'm having is that my car won't start 97gst. The problem I get when I turn the key is like a click sound here and there and this leads me to thinking it's the starter I've tried bump starting the car and it's the only way I get the car to start and run. like not even the car starter would work. As I have the car on i try cranking it to get that buzzing sound and all I get is the lights dimming on the boost gage and the radio starting it can't be the battery because it's new I need some help here I know some ppl have probably posted this before but if I can get some help before I get it to the mechanics that would be wonderful. And if anyone has a picture of where it's located that would also help I'll probably just take it out and get it rebuilt thanks guys

Before removing starter remove battery cables, clean the terminals and put them back on tight. If there's even more than 0.06 ohm resistance in the connection (due to corrosion, dirt, loose, etc), the starter won't get the 9.6v minimum voltage necessary (at the starter terminal) to operate. Old cables can also add resistance (get brittle or corrode). Also make sure the battery negative cable goes under a starter mounting bolt head and is clean and tight.

Check out this link to find the starter: http://www.dsmtuners.com/threads/an...e-the-starter-is-merged-12-7-location.205285/

After you take it out either plug everything in and have someone turn the key to check it or take it to autozone. If starter works than it's probably your power or ground connection

Hey thanks for they reply I tried that link I couldn't seem to find someone talking about locating the starter on the 2g perhaps do you have a picture? I just need to know where it is I've taken out the solenoid before but that's about it

I've tried everything from cleaning to unplugging the solenoid and nothing still im taking a hard guess it's the starter I don't have any idea of what else it could be such a bother LOL

I recently replaced my starter. As mentioned above, it is under the intake manifold, held by 2 14mm bolts. I don't know how you will approach this, but i had trouble getting that sucker out. I approached it from the top, passenger side. I removed my battery, battery tray, moved some things around to be able to have some space. My bolts were kinda stuck in there so i had to soak them in PB blaster and let it sit for some time because they would not budge. See pictures attached. The two red bolts are the ones holding it in place.

Thanks for the pictures bro helped out a lot. So I finally got it out all the hype thinking it was the starter I guess it wasn't after all >.< . So I got the starter out tested it and it was shooting fine. I reinstalled it and figured out what the problem now really was. It's so strange, so the problem I'm having is the starter doesn't have a connection to get the crank it needs . So my solution to what I've done was I go a wire plugged to the starter and ran the wire to the top where I connect the battery. Now what happens is that wire connects to the positive side and if the keys are in the start position the car will start up fine. Trying this without that wire the car won't start any idea what's going wrong ? Sorry for the long azz paragraph

Have you tried replacing the ignition switch?

Nope but I think that's what my problem might be I wrote something above hopefully you can relate to it and give me some help lo.l such a hassle the only way I can now drive my car is by going under the hood and touching that wire to the positive with the key in the on position

There is a one wire connector that runs between the main engine harness and the starter harness. It's located behind and below the thermostat housing (black/yellow wire). This wire supplies the signal to the starter solenoid (on the starter) to engage the starter. Make sure this connector is plugged in and there are no broken wires. Here's a pic:

This wire doesn't go directly to the ignition switch. There is a starter relay (located behind the radio) in between. This starter relay's only purpose is to disable the starter with inputs from the clutch safety switch on the clutch pedal and/or the factory theft alarm system. There are two switches on the clutch pedal. The safety switch is the one that is pushed in when the clutch pedal is on the floor. Try unplugging this switch. That will let the car start whether the switch is working or not.
