Recently I was having shifting problems on my 5 speed.
http://www.dsmtuners.com/threads/transmission-has-no-gears-every-gear-is-neutral.243515/
The first paragraph describes my situation, even the 2nd, 4th, and reverse problem, it did this for about 2-3 weeks. Recently my car started shifting fine, for about 2-3 days. This morning I was leaving Home Depot and it worked fine up until the light, about a quarter mile. When the light turned green I went to pull away, I moved the gear lever into the first position but it wasn't actually in gear and it revved up like it was in neutral. I tried to pull away in 2nd and 3rd and same thing. It didn't feel like it was "clicking" into gear or actually going into gear. After waiting a minute, it actually went into first and I was able to limp the car into a parking lot. The strange thing about all of this is it is like there is no gear there. It doesn't grind or anything it's just like there's nothing there. I called a tow truck and had it towed to a shop, one that I don't trust after a faulty turbo diagnosis, and after about an hour they said I need a new transmission. I think I need shifter cables since there was no grinding. I figured I would ask the experts on here what they thought.

Here's some simple checks to run through:
1- check your shifter cables. The ends are held in place with washers and cotter pins. Make sure they are secure as well as the U shaped clips that secure the cables to the Trans bracket
2- Check your fluid level. Pull out your speedo and take a look. Im not sure the best way to check, but this is how i do it.
3- Check clutch and slave master cylinders. Push your clutch in and out and have someone under the car watch your slave cylinder move your fork back and forth. If not a strong movement, bleed the system right there on the slave.

Drain the fluid see if it has metal debris. If it's not something exterior like cables or clutch/ clitch fork/throw out bearing, sounds like the trans is blown. Draining fluid and seeing metallic is sure fire way to find out. If it comes out clean fill it with redline mt90 and keep looking for your issue.

Ok so I've looked at the cables and they look ok the c-clips are on both ends. I have read stories where the shifter cables break inside the tube and they look fine. I planned on draining the tranny fluid when I get the car back. I still find it weird that even though 2nd, 4th, and reverse were weird that I could just lost all gears. I plan on changing the shifter cables, I found a member on here willing to sell to me and I figure $50 in the chance it will save a tranny rebuild.I feel like it should be thoroughly bled. A couple months ago I had a crack on a flair fitting that was causing me to leak clutch fluid. My grandad and I cut the old flair off, reflaired it, and stopped the leak. After that we bled my clutch for a solid hour.

It's funny last week I actually bought fluid with the intent of changing it when this issue first started.

take the flywheel dust shield off the tranny while you're looking at the fluid for metal shavings. see if your clutch disk broke
