Reading about the crank walk is making me nervous. I have a beautiful stock GS-T Spyder and I want to take care of it.

Is it safe to say that since I have 70K miles and no issues that I shouldn't worry about crank walk?

I am the second owner and the previous owner pretty much baby'd the car.
I am doing minor upgrades, but I doubt I will ever get too much HP out of this car.

Crankwalk isn't anywhere near as common as it is played up to be. Most of the time it was just a misdiagnosis.

I've seen idiots say a hole in their block was from crankwalk... not kidding.

Your motor is either going to have the issue or it isn't. The only thing that is more likely to make it more of a issue is a heavier clutch. Most people saw the failure occur when they upgraded to a heavier clutch plate. The reason for this is pretty simple. They already had the play in the crank to begin with, the heavier clutch just made it stand out much more because of the additional pressure on the crank.

Crankwalk might be more widely known for 2g DSMs than most other car communities. But I've heard of it happening to many other cars. My friend had his coworkers Stingray crankwalk after they upgraded the clutch.

I wouldn't worry about it.

It's the most overblown thing. I have an Evo 4 and an Eclipse and neither have crankwalk. My friends who have DSM's as well haven't had any crankwalk issue. The only car I know of personally that had walk was my friends Audi TT.

Thanks.I don't plan on upgrading the clutch. I always ended regretting it.
My VW....cost way too much.
My Miata...racing clutch felt like crap and no one can drive it.

The GS-T is a great comfortable quiet ride and good on gas...I don't want to screw it up.

Midajustment of the clutch is bad also. If you can push the slave in by hand at least you know the clutch is fully engaging and there is no pressure on the hydraulics when there shouldn't be.

I really truely do not believe that the heavy clutch has anything to do with it. It's a poor machined surface on the crank, shit oil quality, and missaligned thrust main cap.

The heavy clutch argument was just a loophole for machine shops to get out of responsibility.

I agree 100% when I stripped down the stock 7 bolt at around 89k miles (stock clutch, only upgrade was an mbc at the time) we found that the crank was actually UNDER spec and had developed some minor play. This was on the supposed "revised" split thrust block.

the split thrust block has nothing to do with it. plenty of evo 8s have developed crank walk . cranking car with clutch pedal to the floor is most likely reason for crankwalk to start. there is no oil pressure during cranking. heavier clutches most certainly accelerate the process. all 7 bolt factory cranks are NOT hardened like 6 bolt cranks. so the surface wear is much more prevalent with poor oil quality or lack of proper oil pressure.

in short though. yeah its pretty rare. exists far more on the internet than it does in real life.
