I think I have a problem (or way too much time on my hands)
After a few beers and alot of discussion about doing a mid engine all motor conversion
on something mitsubishi I found the perfect donor.A 1999 Jap spec mitsubishi Mirage hatch. 2120lbs
I picked it up for $200 and started to strip it down to a bare shell. Funny thing along the way
I ended up finding $38 in coins all under the carpet etc. The next step was to cut the rear floor and spare well
and start to add square tube to the chassis rails for extra strength and engine mount points
So the next stage was to use all the set up I had in my fwd lancer and get it to fit in the rear.We used the front
cross member, front hubs, brakes and struts. I changet the strut tops to the rear ones and mounted it in.
For toe adjustment I took out the steering rack ends and fabbed up a bracket on the cross member to suit.
So far the total cost of the build including the car was at $350.00(not including my existing set up)Once everything was sitting in place it was time to weld all of the brackets and supports etc. The next headache was the shifter and cable. We simply cut and re welded the shifter bracket in behind, and it all works perfectly.
For simplicity we ended up going with a hydraulic handbrake which only clamps the front brakes.
The next phase was all about weight savings so out came the holesaw.
A non power steering rack was put in and some more cutting of unneccesary brakets and bits and the end result is starting to take shape.
The glass windscreen will stay in but all other windows will be lexan with the drivers side rear window to have an induction scoop of some sorts for the throttle intake.
Next stage is to fabricate a main hoop out of chromoly and a firewall to the roof to seal it off nicely. We will have that done by the end of the week. all the wiring is done and the car runs and drives.
