Update: I have finished my first year of Rally cross. There is tough competition in Prepared AWD. Managed to take 3rd for the season.
We have already started the 2015 season. Here are some great shots from yesterday:

Would love to get this made:

UICP or at least a weld on flange for the EVO MR bypass valve. I feel this would be marketable as this bypass valve is readily available and a proven performer. I have been using this bypass valve with great success in rallycross and track days. I am now able to upgrade my by inter-cooler piping, and would love to be able to use the EVO MR bypass valve.
This is an idea of what I have been able to find. This one deletes the base of the bypass valve to bolt the bypass valve to a 1g/greddy flange.

bypass valve partially disassembled. I would like to see a mount that deletes the hose clamp mount:

Sorry for the lack of updates. This time of year does not afford me time for play. I have managed to squeak in a track day.
New stuff:
The new RRE (modified for EVO III o2 housing) down pipe fit very well and is a quality built piece. Fitment was excellent with only needing to cut off the flange at the end to mate to the cat-back/ or pipe that I have. I was able to break it in on a track day at Grattan.

Was a little rusty at the last rally cross not having been to one since January. I was bumped up to Modified AWD because I had not yet put the back seats in from the last track day. Despite the change, we managed to receive 3rd place in Modified! Was a great afternoon and was very consistent!

Had a great day yesterday at the Waterford Raceway with CCM for the time trial. It is more of a high-speed autocross as we completed hot laps instead of sessions. I improved my personal best from last year by two seconds!

Awesome runs, man for a sports car this thing looks like its meant to live in the arctic. Well done keep up the good work.

Thanks for the kind words.

Here is a run from the CCM time trial. I am playing with some new software. The start is off by like 3 feet, so the lap time is off. This was an 80.6 second run. I did not get my fastest run with the new software.

Lol, that looks just like a video game, thats pretty cool how do you do the hud like that?

I wish there was anything close to tracks like your going to near me.... 2.5hrs away is portland int raceway but that is not much.

I am trying out Race Chrono. Video and data are captured via smart phone and Bluetooth GPS receiver. I am working how to get other inputs such as throttle and braking, but Mitsubishi using MUTIII is making that difficult.

This course is rather small and as you can see, there is not much run-off should someone overdrive their car. I have seen two accidents in my short time going there. My favorite road course thus far is Grattan Raceway, which is 3 hours from me vs Waterford which is only 15 minutes. I will be making it out to Grattan again this year for another track day. I am really looking forward to making this a pavement only car so I can start changing suspension bits. Big plans are coming for this car.

Ran into an issue after the last rally cross. It seems a combination of fatigue and some rust that formed inside the strut tower had taken its toll.

The repair turned out quite nice! I think the rest of the UCA mounts will get the same treatment. Just waiting on some touch-up paint to clean up the work. An undercoating is in the near future.

The DSM performed great at our region's rally cross that took place yesterday. Very tough competition in Modified AWD, taking third behind a fully prepped WRX and All-Trac swapped Rav 4. The course was very tight and technical in the morning, and very fast in the afternoon. I happened to bring the right gravel tires for the terrain. I took a gamble with rain threatening to fall until nearly 2 pm when it cleared up. The White One had a stellar afternoon taking advantage of the fast course. Here are a few shots taken during the day:

No more track-time until spring.............I guess rally-cross will just have to do for now.

Had a good weekend in Ohio for our region's rally cross series. Car ran well with the exception of damaging a rear toe arm. The course was challenging in the afternoon, with loose silt on top of a hard packed surface. Dust clouds also posed a visibility challenge. The evening portion was a fast course taking advantage of the venues banked areas, Ended the day about middle of the pack, which I am happy to even hang with the stage rally-prepped cars that took podium positions.

Here are a few shots from the event:

Prepped for the evening:

A little bit of unseen damage from the last event (ball joint nut jumped ship at some point and the thread stripped out as well). Made for an interesting drive with the rear end wanting to kick out. It is not as frustrating when you anticipate having to cut the toe arm out. This is the reason why it is great to have new spares ready to install.

DSM winter adventures..........

What kind of lights are these? seems to work quite good!
Most of the light provided in the photo above comes from two 55W Xenon spot/flood lights mounted to a custom light bar. I only use them for night rally cross events and night time winter driving on back roads. When they are turned off after use, normal headlights feel more like candles.

Had a good weekend! Took 2nd place overall in class putting a handful of Subaru's to shame. The course varied greatly throughout the day. We began the day with ice and snow, ending with what I would relate to the constancy of dog poop. Car ran great all day. Sorry for some of you, but I don't mind getting dirty.

Here are some runs from the event. The conditions varied wildly from morning to evening. The AM runs were combination of snow/ice over grass and clay. There was actually more grip in the morning than the afternoons $#!T show.

Being busy with life has not afforded much time to dedicated to the DSM collection. There are however some updates.

First off, a phanton knock issue needed addressing before an ice race this past weekend. The knock sensor had clearly outlived its service life. Still having A/C and even the intake manifold bracket, led to scraped wrists and frustration. After some failed attempts to change it, I thought of the basic concept of an o2 sensor socket. Thus the "Knock Socket" was born. With the help of all of my 1/2 in extensions, swivel adapter, and Knock Socket, the old sensor and new sensor were swapped with relative ease.

The Knock Socket:

Reading about members using tablets to run ECMLink inspired me to retire the tuning laptop, and spring for new alternative. I could not be more pleased with the portability, and speed of the tablet!

Now for that ice race!

This past Sunday, a local SCCA group hosted the 1st of their annual Ice Runs. It is basically an solo/Rally cross course set up on a large lake. There are two basic groups, studded and non-studded. Within each group, Rally cross rules are used to class cars. Registration for this event filled up within 3 hours!

IMG_20160131_105634651_zpshulja9x4.jpg

Conditions were iffy considering the forecast called for showers in the afternoon. My practice run was laughable at-best considering they only hold a couple events per year. The ice was much more slick than I have encountered participating in these events thus far. Once you lose grip, it is difficult to get it back.

My class got lucky as we were slated in the first of three run groups. We had the advantage of clear weather and also running with the studded class. Going out after studded cars greatly improved traction. The course was a little shorter than normal, but was still fun, yet challenging. The event runs like a solo (autocross) where your fastest time is what counts. My last run resulted a 139.666 which was good enough to clutch 2nd place to a local Ice run veteran. The car ran great all day reaching speeds up to 75 mph.

Fastest run:

Nice!

What tires are you using for the ice run. Actually, what different tires are you using in general for pavement/gravel/etc?

For the Ice Runs, I was debating on what snow tires to bring. I really didn't feel like taking an extra set for this event. I have a set of 235 Blizzaks which would suite glare Ice as they would have a larger contact patch. I decided to go with 195 General Arctics anticipating poor weather conditions. If it rained, I would rather have slimmer tires to cut through slush and water. We were however, moved to run first during the event. I got lucky running with the studded class as they cut up the ice pretty good for my tire choice. The General's tread helps clear out slush and snow quite well.

I have three main sets I use for Rally cross.

  • Grooved gravel tires: Medium compound rally tires for mud, dirt, and overall loose surfaces for use above 50°.
  • 195 General Arctics: Primary tires for winter events where snow, slush, or mud/water compose most of the course.
  • 245 Blizzaks: Used for glare ice and hard packed surfaces for more grip. We have a couple venues where clay composes much of the course.

Dude, I literally cannot imagine driving that fast on ice. This sets a new level of bad ass in my book :hellyeah:
