i recently purchased a 95 eclipse gsx doner car for my auto 2 5spd conversion on my 95 talon awd and when i started removing all the required parts for the swap i noticed that the tranny bell housing looked clean asf compared to the engine block which made me start wondering if this was actually the stock tranny or a replacement.....

when i researched the trannys serial number (w5m33-2-wqge) i found out that it was out of a evo 1 gsr non-lsd

from what all ive gathered which im not 100% sure if im correct on all this but the final drives between the tranny and the rear are different meaning i have to either changer the rear end final drive or the trannys final drive to match the other...

like i said im not completley sure thats why im posting here hoping to find some guidance LOL

Here's a video on how to identify the different ratios:

I know on my Auto, the final drive ratio is different on the auto than the manual. The ratio of the transmission's gear in respect to the transfer case is also different as well. So your transfer case needs to match your transmission, and the two together need to match your final drive.

ive seen that vid it tells you weather or not ur tcase is an early or a later model and as fas as all three needing to be the same ive read that the tcase dosent matter in the situation only the rear end but again im still trying to verify all that ive been reading..

With Evo 1 and 2s, all you need to do is swap the ring and pinion gears from the intended transmission into the donor. I have an Evo 2 that needed a replacement tranny, and for me I used a 2G GSX as my donor. I swapped the ring and pinion to get the same final drive and that was it.

I have a kind of related question, not to threadjack. I have a trans that has a bad center diff, can I replace it with an early center or is the gear on that a different tooth count? I know the outer gear is a seperate piece on the auto so if that's all thats different I can keep the old one if it isnt bad.

^I've read a few other posts here and elsewhere that seem to suggest that early (90-early 91) have different teeth than later (91-99) diff housings. http://www.ca.dsm.org/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=196881

OP, do you know if the donor car was driving/running with that trans setup beforehand? If so, it might be OK to use as-is but the surefire way is to crack open the tranny and count the teeth on the ring and pinion to get the right ratio for your output to the transfer case+rear end. More detail here, I used these as a guide during my build

Just change the pinion ratio as mentioned. Either change the front diff ring gear to your DSM's ring gear, or change the rear diff's crown/pinion to the 3.909 found in the Evo. It's a rarer piece but available..the shorter gearing is really nice. http://www.ebay.com/itm/JDM-Final-D...3-T-/400690459541?hash=item5d4b033395&vxp=mtr

The Evo's front crown wheel should have 64 teeth IIRC. I'd confirm that's what's in it before putting a 3.909 rear in.

Transfer case does need to match the transmission or you will break stuff.

All of the center diffs between Evo and 91-99 DSM are compatible (the early oddball being incompatible as mentioned).

Nope, the DSM Tcase works. All that needs changing is the final drive via the ring and pinion on the centre diff. The exception is the Evo III in which case you need both the new output ratio and the new Tcase. Yours is E1 so it should be OK.

so the part for auction in that link is for the rear end??

Yeah, as was said you can either change the front diff ring gear and utilize the taller gearing of the DSM or change the rear end and get the shorter gearing of the Evo (assuming that you leave the Evo front and centre diffs intact when changing the rear end). Basically, the point is making sure that all four wheels turn at the same speed. To do that when using a front diff with a different output ratio, you can either A) make the front wheels turn at a taller ratio (swap out the Evo crown for the DSM one) or B) make the rear wheels turn at a shorter ratio (Evo rear end). The way that you choose to go is up to you :thumb:

I ordered the evo rear diff ring and pinion friday. I figured that route would require less work and hopefully the shorter ratios will be fun! :)

that would have been my advice. the 3.9 is more fun for a city driven street car
