So I just did my timing belt and water pump and put everything back together. When I went to start the car the engine turned over and started for about half a second then dies. Any idea?

You didn't by chance disconnect the crank position sensor did you?
Good catch finding that one! What do you mean you can hear them? The belts need to be tight enough not to squeal. Basic rule of thumb is around 1/2" deflection, when pushing down on the belt. What else might you have changed when trying to diagnosis the first issue? Maybe that's why idle is low.
