I have a power steering fluid leak near the drivers side firewall somewhere over the downpipe/exhaust. I have no idea where to even start troubleshooting this. Is this going to be a pretty big job? Anyone had any similar experience?

Replaced pressure hose from pump to rack.

Been there and done that three years ago.

Pressure hose might run close to 50 bucks.

I though I had a rack seal leak, but found a small tear in the hose due to the rubber of the hose had all but hardened.

.. "whew !" Not looking forward to replacing the rack to have it rebuilt at first assumption.

Good luck - DSM

Nah, rack can stay in place, but it's an underneath job.

Get the vehicle on all four jackstands so you can get under all of it, or a hydraulic vehicle lift.

Have to drain all of the fluid out of the system, replace hose, fill and bleed the system.

What needs to get done to replace that hose? Do I need to drop the exhaust or anything?

I got the car jacked up to finally tackle this job, and I got it a bit higher so I had more room to work and see what's going on, and here's what I found. It looks like there is a large tear or hole on the boot on the rack.

I'm going to have to drop the rack to fix this, aren't I?

Balls. I'm going to keep it powered. Should I just buy a new rack? Looks like they're about $130 which isn't bad. I wonder how much a shop would charge. I'm lazy and this looks like a pain in the ass to do on the garage floor.

This is actually a fairly common occurrence. This hoses tend to crack and split sometimes. This would also be the first thing I'd check before exploring more expensive sources.

Good luck taking care of that leak, I had a similar situation where my reservoir was cracked. I went to the junkyard this morning and grabbed me an non cracked reservoir, installed it and took it for a test drive and no more leaks for now.
