My son owns a 2001 Eclipse with the 3.0 Liter. I can't get the EGR and Catylst Readiness monitors to clear. It's had some modifications by the previous owner. It has a header, cold air intake, and I believe it has a light weight flywheel. It's blue. Pretty sure it dosen't have the stock exhaust. MIL light is off. My Actron scanner reports no codes. Car runs great but I need NYS Inspection. I can only have one readiness inc. I've been driving it al overs Gods Green Earth, and they won't clear. Need help please!

R&R.

Remove and replace.

That's about all we can tell you.

The EGR gets carbon clogged so you can pull it and scrape, blast, carb clean the passages.

The cat readiness might be the downstream O2 sensor or a faulty(clogged) cat.

Get to fixin' homie.

Only you can prevent forest fires.

I'm thinking it's not running the tests necessary to clear the monitors. If it was, it would either find them bad and turn the check engine light on, or it would set them to ok. Any comments on this logic?

The CAT readiness monitor should really go off on its own without a lot of miles, unless your CAT system isn't working. That's almost certainly the explanation. Do you have a catalytic converter installed? If the catalyst is good, if you run it on the freeway to get it hot and burn off any contaminants, it should just go to ready. Possibly some CAT cleaner could help, but it sounds like either a bad cat or a bad O2 sensor. Also, you have a V6 non-DSM engine, so you'll need to check out the drive cycles for a 6G72. A 3G forum might be more informative.

Edit: You might need to make sure you have enough fuel in the tank. Some of the monitors will only go to ready with the tank above a certain level.

Thanks for the info. No converters because of the headers. I joined a 3G forum. Who makes the 3.0 Engine? I thought it was Diamond Star Motors since it is also used in Mopars. Just want to get this thing inspected so I can go back to work on my 66 Ford F250 Pick-up. No OBII issues with that:)

Well Diamond Star Motors became Mitsubishi North America by the time 3Gs came out. There are others on this forum who know more on the details of this history/ evolution. It's a Mitsubishi engine, it was used in 3000GTs but not in 1G / 2G Eclipses. There's a summary here . I was just pointing out that with a 3G and a 6G72 engine, you have a different ECU and probably different drive cycles for the readiness monitors, from 4g63/64 vehicles.

If the cat is deleted then it won't go to CAT ready. I believe the ECU looks for CAT ready before starting the EGR ready tests. I guess one way is to put a cat on temporarily to get the ECU to get to CAT ready.

Just a thought but I am thinking bad o2 sensor. I had a similar issue with no CEL and eventually I pulled the rear o2. A bad o2 sensor will rattle when you shake it, not all the time but most of the time in my experience.
