different car when i last did it, but i just too the axle and stood it over the intermediate, and had the intermediate on a piece of wood. then use gravity to tap it into place. been going strong for almost two years now of hard daily driving.

Found out what it was, car has been sitting for a year getting rebuilt. Well last summer I had the intermediate shaft bearing replaced. Apparently the guy at the shop slightly chewed up the splines at the end. Causing the shaft to not go into the axle. I cleaned up the splines with a cut off wheel. And all is fixed. Thanks for the reply!
