Romania, Europe
Hello guys. After I finish to rebuild my engine (2.3 stroker kit, 4g64 crank, je piston 86mm, eagle rods, fic 650cc, etc.) it is time for me to buy a new turbo. So I did a lot of search on dsmtuners forum and I find out that Holset HX35 is the best fit for this setup. Here in Romania, EUROPE HX35 and EVO III 16G is very hard or impossible to find, so I buy a brand new HX40W designed for a bus with 5 or 6 liter diesel engine. I shoot for 350-400 WHP. Turbo is having 8 blades on cold side and 12 blades on hot side and I think is T3 twinscrool. I don't know A/R, LBS flow and actuator setup.

Now here are the questions :

1. Can I buy only a T3 exhaust manifold and install the turbo as it is ?
2. Should I buy this housing to make boost at low RPM and keep my stock 1G exhaust manifold ?
3. What restrictor and fittings do I need for oil in and out for this turbo ? (I have balance shaft eliminator)
4. Do I need external 38mm waste gate ?
5. What is best recomended for my engine setup and this turbo ?

Thank you !

HX40's were only found on 8.3L IS-series Cummins engines.

1) You can, but if you go this route you should source a twin-scroll T3 manifold or the turbo will be quite laggy.

2) Buy what housing? And if you're looking for low-end power, you bought the wrong turbo.

3) Nobody can answer this for you. Install the turbo with a temporary gauge setup installed in the line, and base any restriction on your actual oil pressure reaching the turbo with the engine at operating temp.

4) You'll need an external wastegate of some type. The existing actuator and internal gate will never control boost on a gasoline application.

5) I have no idea what you're asking here.

Sorry, link broken. This housing.

5. If you were in my place in this situation what route would you choose ? I mean best setup or other ideeas if you have... :) sorry for my bad english :(

If you're shooting for spool, then that housing would be a fine choice.

The 8-blade 58/83mm HX40 has trapped 139mph in a .55 Bullseye housing, so it's definitely capable of making power...just not as much potential as it may with a T3 housing and larger scroll.

Depends on what you will use the car for

Only weekend, town and highway and sometimes on the track.

UrbanSmoker I've seen your signature, you have hx40 installed. Can you give me more details about your setup ? What turbine housing do you have ? What exhaust manyfold ? What oil restrictor ? Thank you !

Thank you JusMX141 ! now I can see clear. So if I want boost at low rpm and less HP .55 turbine housing will be ok and keep my stock exhaust manny and install external wastegate. If I want more power (full boost at hi rpm) I can keep the HX40 as is and buy a twin-scroll T3 manifold and install external wastegate. Is that correct ? Thank you again for help !

I didn't run a restrictor, butnlike justin said, you need to find your pressure at the turbo, i have had both .55 and .70, the .55 is by far better for spool on the street but not as pump gas friendly as the t3, i had an STM T3 manifold.

Other details? I sold the turbo. And it was a 60/86 hx40

Basically, yes. :)
I'm personally curious just how fun a .55 a/r bolt on housing 8-blade HX40 would be on a 2.3/2.4L. The thing I'd worry about the most though is backpressure with that combo. Thoughts, @JusMX141 ?
You'd likely get tired of the 8-blade pretty quickly and want something more...may as well just go for the 7-blade right off the bat and have a little something in your back pocket. ;)

What back pressure ? I have 70mm exaust...
