Hey guys I am in need of some help. I have a 1996 Talon TSI FWD. I just bought this car about a month ago and makes it my #4 DSM. I really save this car from a young guy but anyways on to my problem.

I had no issues with this thing until a few days ago. It is not my DD and is more of a toy when I want to raise some hell for 20 or so minutes.

It idles rough and has no power when accelerating. It did have a rough idle until it warmed up and would drive fine. I took it out for a spin one evening and it was running fine, stopped at a buddies house shot the shit a bit and when I left I noticed it had the loss of power while accelerating. When I came to a stop it died and I got her home as quick as I could. It feels as if it has one cylinder misfire and exhaust note sounds as if I have one cylinder down.

I noticed the PO had removed the CTS and was running a mechanical Temp gauge. I installed a new CTS after the issue started and changed the plugs. The old plugs looked ok but I figured they need to go since it had no CTS and no telling how long it was like that. Still the car doesn't want to idle and sounds like a misfire. I turned the BISS out to raise the idle so I can do some checking while keeping it running. It has good spark from coils and from wires to plugs.( I just pulled the wires from coils and plugs while it was running). It does idle good at 1600 rpm with the BISS out and my Wideband shows 13.6-14.0 until randomly it goes way lean to 18 -19 and I seen as high as 22 but it almost dies as I feather the peddle and raise rpms to 3500 or so and slowly decel to allow it to idle again.( still feels like a misfire when i accelerate it though)

I then started looking for boost leaks. I dont have a BLT or a compressor so I used some brake cleaner and sprayed my IC piping and checked around the injectors, TB and everywhere. Produced no different results.

So I started pulling my injector wires while it was running and #2 and #3 idle or accelerating have no difference when off. I pull #1 or #4 and I know for sure they work cause the engine shakes and tries to die so I quickly plug them back in.

These are the stock 450cc injectors. I am thinking either fuel supply is low and causing the issue or my injectors are clogged or not supplying the same supply as the others.

Help me fella's! I have faith.

The brake cleaner check only works for vacuum leaks. Soapy water could help locate some boost leaks by producing bubbles where the air is rushing out but you can make a better boost leak tester from parts at home depot for pretty cheap. Also you could switch injectors around and see if they work on different wires to rule out individual injectors. Check your iac. the biss screw sets the middle area that the iac operates from so it could be bad. Messing with the biss is compensating for whatever is wrong.

I was messing around with it a I got a CEL. Ill try and get it to a Autozone or something to check it and might get a decent lead.

Any tips on how to check if its bad? I know if I had a scan tool I could get a reading but sadly I do not. Would unplugging it while running produce a result?

Thanks!

If two of the injectors dont change when unplugged then thats your main issue. Would cause your lean mix sence theres not enough fuel to compinsate for the air coming in. Try swaping them in place of the other two to make sure they are getting power if they work fine could be ignition related. Or if not maybe time for a new set of injectors..

I haven't had anytime to check out any of the stuff listed above. I appreciate all of the responses and will be looking into this stuff as soon as I get time. I am leaning toward the failed injectors myself but I will be checking all of the above before I just start dumping money into this.

Luckily this is a toy and I am not in desperate need to fix this ASAP.
