Hi guys,

So I have a 97 GSX with a few mods which can be found in my profile. But for the most part besides my 3.5" turbo back exhaust, the car is pretty much stock. So I was doing a pull next to a buddy of mine that just bought a new Lexus RC350 F-Sport.(couldn't resist). I went to shift into 2nd at moderately high rpms(5-6k) and I missed the gear. As soon as this happened my car died. There was no smoke, no jerking, no foul smells, I just lost all power and coasted to a stop. Now the car will crank but won't start at all. I'm going to be checking the timing when I get a chance tomorrow but was wondering what everyone thought.

Is there a possibility something in the ECU may have fried? Also I unplugged the battery and tried to start but it was the same result. I forgot to read the codes before I unplugged the battery so I am unsure whether there is a new code or not. My car currently has a code for the EGR because I deleted it so I don't know if there was an additional CEL or not. Any help or insight is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Paul

Start from the top, baby steps. If you're not getting spark then forget the "I rev'd to 15k and it died", just act like it's your typical no start and forget what caused it for now.

Turn the key to the ON position, does the CEL light come on for 5 seconds (then disappear) and does the stock boost gauge center?

Okay, I am leaving work shortly and will start with these baby steps and post the results. Also gofer, I checked out your awd gs-t... It looks pretty fresh!

Edit: With the key turned to the ON position the CEL lights comes on and goes away and yes the stock boost gauge centers as well. What do these two things tell me?

Yet another update. I checked compression for cylinders 4 and 4. The values were 175 and 179 respectfully. I go to check cylinder 2 and the meter gets to 125 and the next turn of the key my motor didn't crank. Now it won't crank at all. So frustrated!!

Is it possible I blew my starter relay or motor from checking compression on 2.5 cylinders?

I need a DSM mechanic in my area badly!

They tell you that the ECU is working.

You've already checked the IPT/CAS/CPS for your ignition issues, if it were me I'd pull the valve cover and see if you knocked a few rockers off or at least do a once over the valve train and make sure everything's g2g. It won't fix your "no spark" condition but an over rev like that is tough on the valve train if it's not built for it.

How exactly are you checking for spark?

EDIT
Didn't notice your update...

The battery eventually runs out of juice cranking on it unless you've got it on an external charger plugged into the wall or you're jumping it with another car that's running. You live in the NE, all the fast DSM's are out in your neck of the woods so you could probably throw a rock and hit a DSM mechanic.

I actually have a built valvetrain with Supertech valves and Manley valvesprings so I would think it would be okay but I will definitely check, I have another valve cover I want to install anyways.
But yes I understand the battery loses it's power. I'm currently in nursing school I'm just newer to the DSM scene. When I was doing the compression check I had it hooked up to another vehicle. So what are your thoughts? And I swear for the life of me I can't find somewhere to do welding for me plus the mechanical issues.

my 92 died like that. and wuld crank with no start.... it broke the balance shaft belt...and the broken belt must have made it jump time cuz i bent valves... fixed now after new valves and timing and balance shaft belts....but i had spark all along...

pull the head and start examining??

...after compression and leakdown??

how exactly did u check for spark?

Dying to know

And where are u located?

I'm on NY / Vt border

I've only pulled the head once before and those were long hours of learning for me with a buddy I actually met on here. And this was less than 2500 miles ago.

To check for spark I pulled the plugs one by one and turned the key while my dad watched for an arc at the end of the plugs.

And I'm located in Western MA not far from the NY border. I wonder how far that exactly is for you!

I wanted to say balance shaft belt broke and took out the crank sensor . even if you disconnected the battery try cranking the car for 10 seconds and then scan it .
