I printed out that how-to as well, with the pictures missing, so it wasn't much help except to read them step by step.

I had never taken a dash out before. With my wife's help, took 1 hour start to finish, wasn't bad at all.

Only problem was towards the end, forgot 1 bolt at the frame that holds the radio in, got that out and it was otherwise pretty easy.

I'll watch out for that bolt then. :)

My memory is not very photographic, but I'll give it a try.

Thank you.

I already have the blower motor and evap core out, needed to get those 2 out so I could do my ecu harness. I'll be starting on getting the heater core out tonight, so I'll have all new cores, motor, resistor, condensor, drier, compressor, dual pressure switch etc. Essentially an entirely brand new HVAC systems with the exception of the soft aluminum lines in the engine bay.

I bet once you get your dash out, you'll also see the foam tape on the top of the heater core is pretty crappy, so once that's out, i'll take it to home depot to find the right thickness foam tape to replace all that too.

Sounds like a plan to me...and a great way to put my parts car on a diet.

Oh, also when i started, the radio was out, ecu was out, and i removed any ductwork that was the press-fit kind.

the pedal assy is a whole other job, where you drop the steering column first.

Yes, in my case radio ECU are out..seats are out too. Lower dash is out, hood latch is out. Steering wheel covers are out.

Each for an entirely different reason, but helpful indeed!

Was hoping you would chime in on this Vic! You've done this before so you certainly fit the bill for a person to ask. :thumb:

I have a 2g and my heater core is crap. Foggy cabin and smoke coming through the vents. I hate this car. Either bypass the heater core for now and focus on other things or just find a nice shell no rust shell.

Had to do a heater core on mine. Took an hour to get the dash completely out. I even pulled the seat out so the wheel can really drop. Took an half our to reassemble ... go figure: easier to put back together than take apart.

Since my AC went south real bad, I even took out the evap case and removed the evap core, so now it's just an air box between fan and core.

I also plugged up the hole where the evap piping attached to the evap core in the firewall.

When you do start pulling the dash out, do it very slowly. There always seems to be a bolt or screw that you forget to take out.

If you have a junkyard near you with any dsm's, practice on them first. It's easier to learn how to take things apart on cars that you don't care about LOL

All, I am stuck here...has been pretty painless so far. The instructions refer to removing "x" from around the speedometer cable and I was able to obviously remove it from the cluster, but wanted to know how to remove that part. I'd also like to know if the other connectors need to be removed somehow (the grey and yellow large square ones to the left and right of the speedo cable).

What has to go and how?

Thanks!

I ended up using force on the speedo retainer, it went flying but didn't break. You leave the other 2 connectors intact since the other ends were disconnected to the fuse box.

All done and no real damage, but there were several HVAC cables that popped off during the process. I hope I can figure out where they go.

Also snapped a bolt on the passenger side metal rail close to the radio.

If hvac stuff yep that's kinda tricky I ended up getting another from a salave car because it broke, also get the manual it shows you how they go back in not to bad but kinda tricky for someone new doing it.

Thanks, I have pulled worse dashes than this. I have a spare car too, so I can take a look with a little luck,

I am going to have to replace the heater core on my 96 Rs I have never done this before how hard is it going to be I'm reading everyone's post watching videos and trying to figure it out looks like a pain

on a 1g, the dash was engineered so you can remove the heater core without actually taking the dash out. the 2g might possibly be the same way.

Really that would be awesome does anybody know 2g finding the heater core. I watched the video where they had to disable the airbag and cut a bunch of wires and it looks so complicated.
I do paint and body work have built a 99 GS for car shows once but I am learning mechanics so help me out guys

There's no way anyone can get the heater core out without removing the dash first on a 1g. The dash HAS to come out.

RIP me, you're right. per the manual anyway. My dash was already out when I removed all HVAC systems and replaced all components with brand new stuff.
