I have some Ebay slim fans on my 94 Laser. I never understood the purpose of slim fans. The only thing that I could think of is if there was a clearance issue of some sort.

I don't have a clearance issue in my car and my turbo is just a E316g.

I do have a set of stock fans laying around, but I am impressed with the way that these cool.

Could someone give me the scoop as to why slim fans are used and why or why not they may be worth keeping.

Thanks

The slim fans are used for clearance. Bigger turbos and different manifolds are all going to need more room. Ive heard that the stock fans with the shrouds can pull more air than slim fans.

If the slim fans you have in now are cooling fine, then I would leave them as is. No reason to fix something if it works for you.

The stock radiator is also thinner than, say, a Mishimoto rad, so there's another reason for clearance issues. Just remember that the stock fans were engineered to take all the heat this motor/turbo emits, but on the other hand, they also have a lifespan and bearings eventually wear out.

If you're going to get aftermarket fans, the recommendation is name brand, like SPAL, so they don't prematurely die just because of excessive heat in the engine bay.

Thanks all. A/C is not working in the car at present, so while these things cool well now I wonder how they will perform when I fix it.

That will be the real test.
