Okay so I decided to go for a drive tonight.. And while I was out for that drive I wanted to put a little spin on my tires. (98 gst) so coming out of a red light I dumped the clutch and what happened was I took off fine I get to cruisin down the road. Shift a gear. Slides in. I go to shift from 2 to 3 and my shifter is stuck in 2. So I pull over to the side of the road. My young and impatient mind is telling me to yank it out. Ik that was obviously the wrong solution. Long story short. I heard a snap. And now my shifter will only move one direction. Up and down. No side to side. The clutch however will still engage when pushed in to an idle. Did I just break the shifter shaft?

Your first/easiest bet would be to check the cables at the transmission end. Then have a look at the shift-lever/knob end of the cables. It could be something easy like that. If that looks OK, you may have broken a shift fork.

Sounds like you broke the 1-2 shift fork. Check your cables to make sure one of them didn't come off.

I'm not even sure where to start to look for those.

Best to have two people. Have someone move the shift lever/knob and you look at the left side (passenger) of the engine bay. You should be able to see levers/cables covered in plastic moving on the top of the transmission. As they are being moved all ways possible, check to see if things are moving freely. If they are, then your problem is likely on the inside of the transmission.

Yah I appreciate the help tho man. I guess when you get an almost 20 year old car with almost 20 year old parts things tend to break. I'd still never trade my DSM for anything... Except a 99 GSX LOL

What kinda fix is this?

I believe new shifter cables are in order, but would not be 100% confident - I haven't seen the innards to know if they can be fixed or if there is a threaded joint there or not. I would wait for someone smarter than I to reply too.

Can anyone please post a link with a how to on replacing the shifter cables? Should I take it to a shop or go for it myself?
