So took my car to a shop because it was making a popping noise while turning. My driver side axel is busted. Anyway they said my carrier bearings along the drive shaft need replaced. And needs rebalanced. Any thoughts on this? I've never done those before. Also said I could use a new transfer case but that there was a recall on the transfer case?

Axle isn't balanced. Carrier bearings are a remove and replace sort of affair. Requires a press. Transfer case recall has long since expired. Any dealer that does it is doing so on good faith. And it was not the case that was recalled, the case was sometimes collateral damage.

Are the carrier bearings something I should get done fairly soon? They grabbed the drive shaft and were able to wiggle it around pretty good

But I can't really afford it right now they said around $550 to replace all carrier bearings and rebalance the drive shaft

Like pauleyman said you shouldn't have to rebalance the driveshaft. If your carrier bearing needs replaced, replace it and possibly the ujoints for good practice and you should be good to go. The driveshaft is balanced from the factory. I can't tell you if you can hold off on the repair not knowing how severe the wear is.

Jafromobile did a couple videos on the subject. Watch them and you'll get a good idea if you're up for it.

Here is the first one

I'll have to watch it after work LOL.. But does anyone have an idea what a good price to pay at a shop would be for this job?

I just watched the video, I'll probably just have a shop do it. I just don't feel like messing with it LOL

Ok so got my car back from the shop. I took it there for a popping noise that I was hearing in what I thought was the front passenger side. They found my drivers side axel was busted and they told me that's what the noise was. So I had them go ahead and replace it. Well as soon as I get in my car to leave I start moving and I hear the same popping noise again....so I go back inside to tell them and there clueless as to what it could be.... Wow really? You can't pin point a loud popping noise? So anyway do you guys have any ideas on what's making a popping noise in my front right wheel area when I turn the wheel all the way one way? It mainly does it if I'm backing up really slow and have the wheel turned all the way. Same going forward slowly.

I'll go check it out. But how difficult would it be to replace the ball joint? I might just do it myself instead of taking a back to the shop

Alright, are you positive it's your ball joint? It could very well be your U-joints on your driveline. Sound travels. If it were me I'd jack the car up put it on jack stands all 4 corners. Get a friend and have them listen to try and pinpoint the noise, while you are in the car. Having all 4 wheels spin 1st gear. VERY SLOWLY, and break VERY SLOWLY. This is dangerous and you must be very careful. NOBODY to go underneath the car LOL.
Anyways, while the wheels are spinning you should be able to find where the problem is coming from. If it is the ball joints here is a tutorial to replace them in a 1st gen DSM

If it is your Ujoints- the video that KuckFatrina linked is a very helpful one and it is how I did mine. It's really not difficult.

I see you going back to a shop for another unnecessary, disappointing journey.
most members here ask advice and guidance for resolving issues themselves and you were more than provided with help based on what you claimed.
Why go through the trouble of creating a thread if you wont attempt to at least diagnose it yourself, so you can be sure; of what your creating a thread for.

Don't be an ask-hole. - hope your issue gets resolved.

I have attempted to diagnose it myself but found nothing. It's difficult to do by myself. I cant turn the wheel and look around at the same time. And I litteraly have no one to help me out with it. I have jacked the car up And looked everything over and I found nothing that was loose or broken. This is why the car ended up at the shop.

When it comes to doing work under the hood I've done it all and have no issues tackling that stuff. But when it comes to suspension and driveline work quite honestly it scares me. I don't have much experience with it and I also had a friend killed by his own car while he was under it. . . The questions are flying out due to my anxiety from just thinking about possibly having to do the work. So I apologize.

Just remember safety first and always support your car using jack stands. Do not leave it on the jack, because jacks can fail. As for inspecting the suspension components, you can check them by prying on them with a pry bar or by trying to move things by hand. If they move excessively than they are worn and need to be replaced. Watch some YouTube videos to educate yourself on what to look for. That may prove to be more helpful then reading off the forum.
