Ok I set out to mainly get the open season jitters out and make some big tuning changes. I installed a new set of FIC SP1050s, the ECMlink IR boost controller, and decided to swap in the e316g. I wanted to use this turbo because I wanted to over power the tires to make sure I can take full advantage of the new boost per gear option. Boy was I shocked in how the car ran. First off this track is 3990' up in elevation and had a DA of 5600' this day. I didn't have high expectations.

The record was held by Tyler at Forced Engineering. It was 10.26@133. So I barely squeezed by with my 10.25@136. There is so much more in the car and cant wait to get back out.

All the mods are the same as when I last set the 14b record. Small break down goes like this:
eagle/wiseco engine
crower 264/272 cams w/evo8 springs
extrude honed 1g intake
stock trans with welded 2g fwd diff
Brian Turhune axles
Ecmlink
Fic sp1050s
walbro 255 external pump
fp manifold
untouched e316g w/ported e3turbine housing
sbr intercooler

Every pass got quicker as I adjusted the fuel and tweaked the boost controller. I did miss 4th on my 3rd pass but still managed to run a 10.6 that pass.

Heres a quick video that I threw together. Might need to do some hiring in the video/editing dept.

Congratulation!
What was your boost level?
Was it pump gas or e85?

Absolutely amazing, expecially considering tyler's over the top setup.

How are you liking those SP injecters? Notice any of the benefits they claim? I was thinking of picking up a set.

Good Job Justin!
I just had a thought based on your facebook post- have you considered an EVO3 AWD trans with the 5.2 final drive and 26" tire?

Congrats Justin! Simplicity, weight loss, and tuning is an effective combination! It's neat to see an entirely different setup that netted very similar results on the same turbo. Where Tyler showed what can be done with what I would consider high end stuff (Methanol, aluminum rod/high compression, custom tubular manifold) in a relatively heavy auto awd, you showed what can be done with a lightweight effectively setup race gas fwd. Both are super impressive, congrats on taking the record.

I did do a run down on all the gear ratios mitsu had to offer in the w5m and f5m trans. Mainly because I need more 1st gear. You can see how quick I have to shift into second. The numbers I ran for my setup came up pretty accurate as for as mph to rpm. With that said, the evo set had a lower mph all the way around with the 26" tire. The only thing that came close to what I needed was the GGSX trans. As far as I know the parts where not interchangeable to where I could swap in the first gear that I wanted.

Im still trying to dial in the boost more. It was 29 or so dropping to 24 on that last pass. Im doing this on Q16 race gas. I still have some dialing in of these injectors. I only have the 4 passes on them so far. The only issue I had with them was getting a global right since q16 has a 13.4 stoich and the info on the injector card is either for E85 or regular gas with a 14.7 stoich. I've got them close now.

As far as the 60' its my battle haha. SO the first pass was a 1.64. Then a PB at this track with a 1.58. The last to passes where 1.62s. Ive been trying to get this car to cut consistent high 1.5 60's. After last night of reviewing all my logs I think I got it figured out though.

Wait til I get to the lower elevation track :)

Justin. When we ran q16, we treated it just like gas. I just ran a little richer than most would and the car loved it. Mid to high 11's and the car was a happy camper. I set the global up just as you would regular gasoline and the car seemed to take it well. This was all done with egt data from each cylinder to compare to the previous fuel the car ran.

I did find the same that the gas afr readings in the mid to high 11s to be the best to. Im starting to tune using Lambda now. Since the stoich of Q16 is 13.5. Right now im 2-3% to lean across the board and I have my global set to almost the 14.7 scale. I just find it easier to tune the car with compensating for that small percentage.

Which Ill add that by tweaking the global and the Fuel pressure I was able to get both my afr/est and boost/est to line up to what they should be in the ecu.

While super expensive, it was a fantastic fuel to run. We made big power and the car was reliable and predictable. It smelled great as well. The only thing we had to worry about was major elevation changes as we would drop over 5000ft sometimes. Some simple math and it pretty much was on the money with the adjustments everytime.

Im having a very hard time wanting to change to a different fuel. I love this stuff. Everything you said sums it up to. I might try to swap to the VP C85 to see if Ethanol will give me anything. Guys that have actually swapped the fuels, think that it might be a wash.

I made a solid 34hp gain switching from Q16 to E98 with 4psi less boost on my old FP3065 setup a few years ago. I don't have the dyno sheet to prove it anymore, so take it as you will. I bought a 55gal drum of E98 and including the ridiculous freight shipping cost I paid, I'm at about $8/gal for the E98, which was about 50-60% the cost of Q16, at the time.

Nice Work, Congrats. Can you share your clutch/flywheel combo?
Right now im just running a stock fwd flywheel and an act 2600 w/solid 6puck

Im trying to avoid having to order and ship fuel. Just such a hassle. At least the Q they always have it in stock. It stores well for me to.

I am willing to bet everything I have learned that at these low horsepower outputs that there will be little to no gains switching between all the common fuels and tuning each of them as far as could be. Not enough to warrant the change for the average racer. Now a 1000hp, 2000hp or any serious car none of us could afford certainly can benefit from making the correct fuel choice, just not some 300hp Mitsubishi.

With that being said, I will be using methanol to start the year on my 14b car. It is merely to learn the fuel and give the turbo one more chance. The end result will be an 80mm turbo on my car however. So I intend on utilizing all the methanol has to offer before long

Well Methanol should have good gains on any level. I mean if I can get 15-20hp on a mod then thats huge for me. For you to start on it is a good idea because well, you just cant blow up a lot of stuff on such a small turbo :)

Mathematically there is only a few percent difference in power potential between race gas and e85, but there are other things that are not as easy to quantify, like cooling effect, and some setups take better advantage of those differences than others. That's what I attribute people's varying experience to. When I went from C16 to E98 back to back on the 16g on my own car my ET dropped from 10.39 to 10.31, but I had no time to tune for the new fuel at all. That was 2 degrees less timing and very close on the AFR, just a starting point for the first try. I got a lot more out of the E85 later on, but it was on other turbos, so no good numbers. I'm so used to E85 now I never want to go back to gas. Just the cost and the consistency with weather changes is worth it for me, even if power was identical.

I'd like to see you toss an 68HTA on her and try to chase ER's record next, Justin. :) Doing big things with that car man, good work!

I like the license plate diffuser btw, clever. :sneaky:

I think there will be a bigger difference in power from C16 to E98 than from Q16 to E85. I did upgrade injectors with hopes of trying a few different fuels on the 14b. I mean I'm game for anything. Just gonna have to take my time and get the most out of each.

Well.......... I do have an HTA68 sitting here on the shelf. I'm gonna go back out in two weeks at my track to work out a few more bugs in the tune. Then it's a big swap game. I've got unfinished business with the 14b. Then I need to take the 16g back to our sea level track. Then hopefully I can toss on this HTA and get that record to :)

Didn't take me long to figure it was just dead weight. If it was on the car it had to be function able LOL
