I took off my door mirror assembly because the motor makes noises but doesn't actually move the mirror. The mirror and housing are now sitting on my desk. I don't know how to go about breaking it open. Do I pry the mirror off or do I come in from where it bolts onto the car? I don't want to break anything.

I haven't done this with any DSM I've owned, but have to others. You're best option is probably to CAREFULLY pry the glass off. Then You Can Get To THE motor. But the motor I would think, should bolt to the base plate. Again, just be careful when prying it off. I'm sure you know everything one these cars are fragile with how old they are now.

Thanks for the response. I think you're right. I have to take the glass out. I did read that taking out the glass may cause the plastic clips holding it to break. I also read that 3M adhesive can work as a good substitute if that happens. That or I can add 'door mirror' to my expanding list of small things to get at a junkyard.

Amazon has the door side mirrors for 19 with ship for drivers side or 30 for passenger side. I bought the drivers side and it fits perfect n works great no problem so far.

Thanks for the tip. Some sellers have really good pics of their mirrors for sale. I wasn't expecting that. I would just buy a new unit but mine is in near perfect condition (apart from the motor crapping out). I don't want to do away with it if I can help it. Plus, I like fixing stuff.

I'll pop the mirror out tomorrow - hopefully not accompanied but the popping sound of clips breaking. :p

Make sure to apply very light pressure also if you can find a plastic pry bar that would be safer.

Which one is broken? I still have my passenger mirror I can sell you for cheap if that will help.

Hot dang, it would be so cool to have the mirror off your race car. Your car is my desktop background. But it's my drivers side mirror that's broken and it's white. :/

I used a plastic ruler and a t-shirt. I pried up on the far end of the mirror (farthest from where it mounts to car) and used the t-shirt to keep from scuffing the surround. The mirror actually came off with the cover to the mirror motor as well. I'll post pics later. There were no clips that could easily come off. I'm going to replace the motor and seal it back together.
