I personally (not told by a friend) had to swap a starter from my 98 GSX using one form my 99 GST. The arm was not retracting. Both starters had the same part number MD172860. The auto starters are different. I will agree that the flywheel is different, but it still works out to be compatable with the starter from either FWD or AWD. FWD turbo flywheels have 110 teeth on the ring gear (and thus, a larger diameter) compared to AWD flywheels that have 106 teeth.
