Came across a deal i couldnt pass up
I only spent 350 on a running/driving mostly clean body 98 gs

I'm originally from the Honda scene prior to kids an 8 years later getting back into tuners honestly thought I was gonna take the 4G63 bolt her up minor rewiring and good to go like a Honda boy was i wrong

After research it's not impossible but you can build tune and boost the 420a for half the cost

Looking forward to everyone's builds, learning , and hopefully providing some help to DSM noobs like myself

I will be hopefully over the next year building the 420a and boosting to a goal of 3-400 whp and taking on the challenge of building a megasquirt.

Very excited hopefully I can find the time to get this thing together

Welcome to the DSM world.

Putting an eclipse 4g63 into a GS is ridiculous it requires cutting and welding of mounts and frame pieces, its kind of silly. On the other hand Evo 4g63 engines have been put into DSM's with literally no modification to the body of the car, you will have to modify your axles, wires and and a few other things. In reality it is a really good idea because of how good that platform is. Obviously it is more capable than a 420a, but it all depends on your budget. If you are going to drop 5k into building a 420a it would cost near the same to do an evo swap if not less.

Either way you go, good luck, and I hope you enjoy your DSM.

Thanks @Christoph
I have done a fair amount of research on internals.. ems. Etc and I will be building the 420a platform just to have a beast with bragging rights
The plus side is it was originally a lotus project engine that was scrapped and finished off by chrysler :-(
the head is said to flow better than the 4G63 head granted the rest of the engine is basically junk in Stock form
It will be a challenge and it will be fun all in all it doesn't matter what platform you have you have to pay to play!

Valve cover off.. valley is pretty clean considering 210k
But holy mother of RTV... why spend 10$ on tube of rev than 20$ on a new gasket dumbfounded..

Cleaned up valve cover
Not sure if it was the initial painting or casting process but it was far from smooth

Painted to stay clean debating on keeping it silver to match the car or going back to black..
either way makes the rest of the bay look that much worse..

30 post seem to take a while to become a full fledged member
FYI all initial pics will be maintenance related literally need to replace all gaskets, fluids, bushings, ball joints, tie rod ends etc...

After its back to factory or better than new standards I will work on acquiring parts for the build and update as I have time

Look forward to input/criticism from other members

For me nothing floats my boat like a 4g63.

I tried putting a turbo kit on a celica that had a 5sfe engine in it. Could have done the 3sgte swap for half the price I dropped in parts. So i sold it all off and just made the car look pretty.

I would keep it naturally aspirated and make it as fast as you can.

Honestly NA work will cost just as much if not more as turbo and make easily half the power
Believe me not discounting the 4g63 but the 420a is plenty of platform.. consider this I invest 3-4k to build and boost this car into the 300+ range
I would easily pay that same price for a clean stock gst.. what kind of respect do I get from having a stock gst over a boosted 420a 300+whp?
Not to mention the self gratification

In all honesty I was planning on building a 240sx or 350z/g35 drift car depending on what I could find but I would be easily 15k into that build and likely to smash it in the first 2 seasons
So I happened to come across this opportunity and jumped at the bit to get back into the tuner scene
She will start off as a DD over my lifted/modded F250 PSD but I'll probably pick up an extra engine to build and go from there

Do whatever you want- it's against the nature of the forum to deter someone from attempting to achieve their goals....however, you have to consider that when you're done you're still going to have what's essentially the Dodge Neon version of our platform regardless of how well it runs.

It would be like if Honda made a less-durable, less-powerful Civic that had a complete Chevrolet engine and transmission...and you were attempting to built it because you saw a glimmer of potential. To any 4G63 owner the 420A has no real potential as very, very few have made any serious power (above what a stock GST with bolt-ons) would make. I would know- I drove a 420A-powered GS daily for 11 years. It got great fuel mileage and made no power....exactly what they were designed to do.

Look around....there are deals out there. I paid under $2000 for my current daily driver GST. With a 16G, clutch, exhaust system, fuel mods, and a tuning platform I will have spent far less time and money to make the same (or more) power than if the same car had a built 420A.

@JusMX141 believe me if I could find a clean 2g gst or gsx in the 2k- price range near Los angeles I'd sell this thing a buy it but I have honestly seen nothing but junk in that range requiring a new engine/etc.. so again that would put me well over my total anticipated investment into this project to replace.. build.. boost.. and get into the 3-400whp range granted I could continue to grow into the 600+ range on that engine but I'm not looking for that
Like I said initially I ASSUMED IT WAS LIKE A HONDA in the respect you could swap engines easily between the "similar" platforms with out knowing the stupid mistake mitsubishi made in making 3 different engine platforms that are not easily interchangeable.. so much for thinking I could easily swap a 4G63 into it before buying it..have Hondas to thank for that LOL
Maybe it was engineered obsolescence who knows..

Just like JusMX141 said, Do what ever you want. I implore you to do so. Thats the point of owning something, it's yours and only you can do whatever you want with it. BUT, there is a reason some, including myself, will advise you to not use the 420a, we want to see your car and yourself do well.

Oddly enough from what I seen most 420a guys who go through with a build get ragged on for it.

Hopefully you don't take anything negative from this post as I hope you do whatever makes you happy, truly.

@AlwaysSunnyOhio I too love the Nissan platform currently owning an FX35 with the vq35hr(same as the 350z/g35s) it's an awesome platform with nearly perfect weight distribution!
Unfortunately wife and family talked me out of drifting (for now) ;-)

@Christoph and any other gst/gs owners what are you at in year/type..total cost of purhase/build.. and whp? Also state in which you reside because that plays a serious factor in the car? Just out of curiosity.. you may sway me to clean her up sell her and go gst/gsx but I honestly don't know

I also come from the Honda (Accord) scene LOL and these DSM's intimidate the crap out of me :(

Trying to swap in my 2.3 stroker and it seems like I'll never get it done--just one thing after another keeps coming up. Missing a sensor here, there and so on.

I've owned two 420a's and modded them, but no matter what you do it will cost more then a 4g63 and produce less power. I'll never go back to the 420a! Lotus dumped the project for a reason, all 120hp of it.

The evo swap is interesting I'll have to look into it more
@rough
Like I said before I paid 350 for a great car spend 3-4k to build and boost and it'll cost less and be way more powerful than a stock gst
And now this evo8 swap is apparently possible but I'll have to do more digging because that will probably cost more then getting a gst
I'm looking at total cost for a fun weekend driver not a 1000hp dyno queen

That's why I asked before what people have fully invested cost of gst/gsx +power mods.. And current HP
But I haven't gotten any responses on that just everyone saying sell the car and get a gst

I started from scratch with my 2g TSI AWD--2.3 motor, trans w/case, full gasket kit plus OEM belts, fp20g, 550cc injectors, evo9 fuel pump VRSF intercooler and I'm at about 4k. prob another 2k to get it running well with DSMlink and a tune. Ball park figure.
