Has anyone else tried to fit a racing seat, with proper positioning, in your racecar? I find that 1g seat provisions are terrible.

Building anything up off the stock mounts made the seat way too high and my 6'3'' teammate's helmet was above the level of the halo, which is as tight to the pillars and ceiling as they get.

Trying to mount a seat avoiding the stock tunnel meant the seat was so far out to the left/outside of the car that I wasn't comfortable how close it was to the door bar, and the seat wasn't anywhere close to centered in front of the steering wheel.

Here is what I did, the pictures should speak for themselves. I'd be happy to answer any questions; hopefully this helps someone tackling the same problem. Seat is an Ultra Shield pro road race, seat brackets are kirkey (with layback and height adjustment) and the sliders are sparco double locking. Sliders mount directly to my new floor pan.

Seat position is now awesome, seat is perfectly centered on the steering wheel, as low to the ground as it can possibly get (just about) and has miles of adjustability, I'm even thinking my 7' friend might fit! We'll see.

The only risk is that I've now cut into space where the exhaust normally runs. Being a dedicated race car, I'm sure I can make it work, or figure out another exhaust path. I have some options there but i'll update once I start tackling that.

What has everyone else done to get it right?

A buddy of mine who is ~6'5" had to skip the sliders and mount his race seat directly to the floor of his 2G. Not much headroom in these cars with a helmet on.

I have Recaro Pole Positions in the 1g and the seat brackets are way too high. I bought a couple pieces of 1/4" aluminum sheeting to make some custom brackets that sit right on the floor but haven't gotten around to actually fabbing them up. I remember when I had the seat sitting directly on the floorboard for test fitting it felt much better.

We ran into a similar problem as Chris mentioned that some brackets just set the seat way to high. I had some brackets fashioned in my 2G that were very low and the seat was mounted directly to them. No need for sliders if the seat is just for you, meaning it should not need to be moved. They did drill a few extra holes just in case we needed to move the seat around for any reason.

I had Corbeau F1 (if I recall) in my car and those seats were a good deal and very comfortable after I shot some foam into the fabric and fashioned it to my liking. Could've stayed in there any length of time.

Chris, the issue you might discover, as I did, as you go vertically downward you will hit the tunnel first (and maybe even before you can get much further down). The tunnel gets in the way of mounting the seat lower, and you'll have to push the seat quite a ways out towards the door. It might work out, but it wasn't what I wanted to do from a side impact/safety standpoint as well as the annoyance of not being centered in front of the pedals and steering wheel.

To center the seat I would have had to go up and partially over the tunnel, but I had no headroom. Literally.

I'm not really familiar with the 2g, I can only hope the situation is a bit better there.

I did a few things to install mine. I did hammer on the tunnel a bit to start. I removed all the sliders and made my own with square tubing that fit inside square tubing. I also have the outer slider higher than the inner slider which moved my head inwards in the car. I spent a lot of time farting around to get a seat in a 1g that fit the 4 drivers that share the car. Another hint is that my sliders also are installed higher in the front than in the back in addition to the outer one being higher. When the seat is moved forward it actually raises. That lets the short driver see over the dash and when its all the way back the tall driver has his seat as close to the floor as possible.

Not sure how much it'll help, but I fit two of the Summit Racing Specials into my Talon using the OE brackets. I more or less used the same method as Nate and separated the original brackets from the rails. Then I bolted two pieces of metal stock laterally. There's no "adjustability"so unless you're my size, you won't fit in the driver's seat.

Even after adjusting it every which way, my helmet still hits the sunroof glass. I'm 6'1 and it's a cramped interior, so I just deal.

Thanks for the pics! After looking at that, I think another component of my issue was the fact that my race seat has a very 'square' bottom, meaning it doesn't taper out from the base. That taper gives you some ability to go lower and avoid the tunnel. My seat is also pretty wide (17") which isn't necessary for me but if we went any smaller my teammates would probably loose circulation in most of their body.

I cut out the stock seat mount stampings pretty quick, as I knew building up off those would get it way too high. If your helmet hits the sunroof, with a cage you'd be quite a bit above the halo. No bueno.
