This might have been said but i couldn't find much and not with my info. I have a 98 gsx with 132k miles on the body and the top end with work down to it has 150 miles only. I am having the bottom end built to be able to push 375-400hp. Then next year put a stage three trans and get my car to push 500-600hp. Its a 5 speed. it has a stage 3 top end build with 272 cams and there adjustable. Has the arp works. I am building the car and adding a precision 52/52 ball bearing turbo, a evo 3 mani, wally 255, fmic, 780 injectors and other go fast parts. Has a srs 3" exhaust system with no cat. So I need a tune so i was told i could go dsm link or keep the black box ecu and i was thinking to keep the black box as i read somewhere its almost the same as dsm link but not sure. So thats what i need help with what does the black box ecu and dsm link have in common and how are they difference? I am new to the whole dsmlink so im not sure what dsmlink does. i know its how you tune the car but what else? I know with dsmlink you can have 2 step but what else? Also i know if you tune of a black box you need to flash it. But i dont know if you can get the same stuff out of it like 2 step and such? Also i know you have to have eprom for dsm link and then dsm link is about $500 or so but if black box comes in 98-99 dsm why don't more people use it? do you need anything else to tune a black box other then flashing it? I know dsmlink you need a laptop but do you need one for a blackbox? Also I just want to be sure with my build im doing the right think and going black box. I just want to get the same things id get out of a dsmlink. I am already spending a ton on my build which im fine with but if i can save with black box having almost a dsmlink id go that route.

I know this is long but if you guys could help me out as much as you can answering all my question id appreciate it. Links would help but id like more answers on here to make this easy. Thanks in advance

To answer some of your questions. Yes you need a laptop for either one. A lot of people decide to swap to an EPROM because there is more support for it on here. And dsmlink is a little more user friendly. And also you can make changes instantly.
If you want to just keep your black box ecu you will need the openport 2.0 cable to connect your laptop to the car and a reflashing program on your laptop(ecuflash most popular). Then you have to decide what decide what changes you need to make the reflash your ecu. With ceddymods you can get most of the things you can with dsmlink like 2 step. And you'll also need a data logger to see if the tune you flashed onto your ecu is doing what you want it to.

my mechanic who is a friend of mine said for my build im doing I am fine with the black box and told me that he will tune my black box with creddy and will set everything and that I shouldn't touch it so I don't mess things up. But I kind of read that you can set the black box to have 2 step and anti lag but idk what else. If anyone know how to tune/flash black box what can you get out of the tune like you get from dsm link. I looked at the creddy website and had no luck with what you get from tuning black box like dsm link. Help would be great.

Guys any answers on this yet?
I have the same problem except I have a 96 gst
My car is a 96 gst with a non eprom ECU
I have a black box off a 99 GST and I already bought the tactrix openport 2.0
I've read around that you can still get 2step/antilag on the 98-99
But for the 95-97 you gotta pull a pin or wire up the clutch switch or something like that.
All I need left to be able to tune mine is just that pin stuff and how to tune it. Any help would be appreciated guys

For your year you actually have to add a pin. I have been reading on this for last hour here at work. If you have the cable just download ecuflash, get evo scan, and away you go. I am gonna mess with mine someday and get good with it. All the options are pretty damn sweet.

All options are the same with a black box ecu. With the exception of flex fuel. Most steer towards link because of the support it has, which is non existing with ceddy mods. It's a little more invloved but not impossible to pick up. Pretty easy once you got the hang of it. Recently, e85 was made available in a station near me so I think I will be switchin to an evo 8 ecu to take advantage of the flex fuel capabilities.

Thank boss
Ok so I have the openport 2.0 but I have a 96 gst
I need EvoScan, and what cable?
What do I need openport for?

I know this is some what old but what about the 95-99 n/a 4g64s? Is it also a black box ecu?

Black box ecu's are only in 98/99's.
My car was made in 10/07/97 but it's a 98, I pulled it out last night to confirm it's a black box, and it is.

PCM (ECU) REPROGRAMMING
Mitsubishi vehicle engine PCMs (ECUs) have been equipped with reprogrammable processors since 1998 (except 1998 Galant). 1995~1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse RS & GS with 2.0L non-turbo engine (Chrysler 420A engine) ECUs have been equipped with reprogrammable processors since 1995.

To reprogram Mitsubishi vehicles, you must use one of two different reprogramming tools. For the 1995~1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse RS & GS (with Chrysler 420A engine), you must use a Chrysler Flash Reprogramming Unit, MIT992000-A . Click here to order one from SPX, or call them at 1-800-533-5338.

To reprogram all other Mitsubishi vehicles identified in the Mitsubishi ECU Reprogramming Application Table , you can purchase or rent the Mitsubishi MUT-III scan tool. Call 1-888-727-6672 for purchase or rent information, or Click here for more information. In addition to these options, you can use an approved J2534 solution for reprogramming. See the J2534 link at the top of the page for more information.""

Well I don't have a 420A I have the 4g64. I know I can get evoscan to log but can I flash it?
