I've been wanting to put my Apexi megaphone dunk exhaust on my car for a long time now, but someone informed me from experience that it can cause the turbo to run higher boost. So I'm wondering if I should go ahead and upgrade to a 16g turbo. But I'm concerned that a bigger turbo would damage my high mileage engine. My car has almost 207,000 original miles on the engine. Would I need to rebuild the engine before I do anything? For right now I'm looking to just replace the muffler, not do a turbo back Or cat back system or anything like that.

You should run a compression and leakdown test to see how healthy your engine is. I am assuming they were referring to boost creep, which there are remedies for but upgrading the turbo should not hurt anything as long as you keep the boos at safe levels. Is your exhaust a catback or turboback.

I'm running fully stock everything so far. What would remedies be? I'd like to stay with the stock turbo for now if possible. I just don't want to blow it up with too much boost. And how's a compression test and leakdown test done and what are they? I only know basics so far. Still trying to learn.

Is the exhaust your looking at a cat back or turbo back? Most people only see creep once they do a turbo back. Most cat back systems won't cause creep at all and are harmless to the motor. My dad had a 2g with like 240k on it and he put a Megan racing kit on it dp and all with no issues, but like others have said it will also depend on how healthy your motor is.

Cat back eventually. Right now we're just cutting off at the old muffler. Pretty much just for better sound at this point since we want to get the Apexi out of the elements before it gets rusty. We're not gonna do any major work until it gets paid off when we get our taxes back.

Google any question almost with DSM at the end :aha:, and It usually gives you the answer and it's here on tuners :hellyeah:. I new nothing about these cars at first, can learn a lot here.

If the car is up to date on maintenance, a 14b would be a wonderful upgrade, and won't have to worry about boost creep. I had creep on my 16g, was fixed with my thermal cat back and ported my waste gate a little held 12lbs up to 7k. Now back to 14b cause it blew oil. But as stated before leak down test and compression test will tell you a lot about your motor, and more so of what is ok. But good luck with your DSM adventure.

I have one more question I didn't think of: if I upgrade the turbo, will I have to upgrade the intercooler as well? I forgot all about the intercooler since the stock one is so small. Lol

The side mount intercooler should be good as you are trying to keep the car stock and running with 200,000 miles on it. They will heat soak if you are hot rodding around a lot but it sounds like you are just trying to keep the ole car running and in good shape. If you are racing or using the turbo a lot then the front mount intercoolers will definitely lower the intake temps so much better than your stocker. It will depend on what kind of driving you are doing in the car really. MTC :thumb: :talon:

Sounds like a front mount intercooler would be in my best interest. The hills around here give the turbo quite a workout. Lol. But will it fit with the stock bumper?

You could get a stock supra mk4 side mount intercooler these don't require much mods to the body work on a dsm, and they look stock to boot, but can handle extra hp and boost, being much thicker then the stock dsm unit, all you need to do is flip one of the plastic end tanks around to make it route the hoses in the right direction, throw a mhi big evo 3 16g, some evo injectors, dsmlink [or some type of tunning software] in the mix, and you will not regret it.

I have a write up on 1 g front mount intercooler installation on this site. You will have to cut some of your bumper support out. If you find my article you will see the pictures that show what I had to do on mine. With a plasma cutter it's very easy but trying to cut it with a cut off tool would be harder. Search for 1g VRSF FMIC install for more on what it entails. I know you have a 2g but install is similar. Try this :

Thanks for all the information and ideas guys. I posted a new list of plans for Toothless in my build journal based on the info gathered here, in case anyone wants to follow along.
