On my girlfriends RS there's been several performance problems, including erratic idle, excessive exhaust (but no real loss of oil), sometimes an engine miss, occassional hesitation. I changed plugs, wires, compression is perfect, swapped the TB with one from my old GS with newer tps and IAC, cleaned IAT and MAP sensors (intake Mani is filthy). As I was fiddling around I noticed when I pulled the hose off the egr solenoid I could see some smoke sputtering out at idle. Could an egr stuck open cause all these problems?

Sound like a good place to look, pasted a couple of quotes of ehow below hope this helps.

An EGR valve that is stuck in the closed position will raise the temperatures in the combustion chamber, creating a knocking or pinging.

If the EGR valve is stuck in the open position, the vehicle will experience a rough idle or frequently stall. If the valve is not completely stuck open but never achieves a tight seal when it closes, the engine can "miss" or shudder because of the improper mixture of the combustion elements.

Also had a 95 that missed and sputtered and after changing everything under the sun it turned out to be the ecm,

Well I pulled the hose from the solenoid to the intake and just clamped it off, and it seems to run a little better. Got a replacement for next to nothing, so once I get the gaskets I'll go ahead and swap it. I also noticed the engine buck when I pulled the throttle, so I'll be replacing the rear roll stopper shortly. I still can't figure out why it smokes so much, though. Not until warmed up and it's definitely oil/ exhaust. Just barely tinted. I'm not noticing a big drop in oil.

When you did the compression test was the engine warm or cold? Did you ever do a leak down test?

if you dont have the tools to fab up an egr blockoff plate, you can just cut a piece of a pop can and slide it in there. ive done this a few times, easily reversible if you want to.
