Hey everyone about time for an oil change, I was running Amsoil signature series 10w-30, and was thinking of going with the dominator series this time or possibly a different series.. My dsm is a 91 6bolt awd and had about 300-350ish hp. It's my DD just wondering what you think on the dominator series or If I should run a different weight etc.

10-30 I have always found to be the best on our cars, I would in your case look into full synthetic. Mobile 1 is what I run In DD (542 hp)

Alright thank you, I think I might just stick with the sig series then, it's full synthetic and haven't had any problems with it. Turbo spools quicker too :)

I would have gone with bigger clearances if this was a drag only car, but I put 60-100mi/weekend on this thing in nice weather, so I needed to do street duty well, and I don't know how well bigger clearances would be for that. Next motor may be in the .003-.0035" area though as I will probably go kill mode when I build that one.

Use the same clearances as you have before (.0025-.003") , .0035" is extremely loose and unnecessary for both mains and rods unless you are running an aluminum rods and need the clearance for expansion. Stick to the general rule of .001" per inch for bearing clearance. Looser PTW is more important.

Maybe that was the PTW

.0035" is tighter than most of the recommendations I have seen. My current wiseco HD were recommended to be at .004"-.005". My previous Ross were recommended to be at .006". I can't speak on other brands though.

Ams will pay off in the end after you order a few changes worth you can get dealer/prefered customer prices and save about 3 to 5 bux a qt. I run the dominator series and change always before 4k no issues so far.

Do you run it? how many miles do you go before changing?

Yes, i used to run 15w50 Dominator and then switched to 10w30 Dominator due to higher than preferred oil pressures especially when cold.

I change it twice a year. After winter cold month and again around October. I do not drive much, perhaps once a month take it out of the garage and cruise around for about 60 miles.

If it was a daily driver, i would change it every 5K miles.

I use Dominator 10W 30. Like many "Racing" oils, it does not have detergent, so itwould d be wise to change it often, I believe, as the inside of my head has begun to take on a goldish color over a 2.5 year period, though this may only be due to the additives in the oil. Also, once I changed it after 4k miles, and my new oil was almost immediately black, so I had to drop it (what a waste) and I put in Mobil 1 10W 30 then ran the motor at 2k RPM for about 2 minutes then dropped that oil and put Amsoil in again and its been clean since. Dont know why, there was just a lot of crap in there for some reason...

Run synthetic, which has better thermal properties than standard (which will keep your turbo happy). Start with the factory recommended viscosity combination. If you live in really cold weather, drop down to a 5 weight on the low side. For really hot weather and/or an older engine, bump up to a 40 or 50 weight on the high side. Check your dipstick every so often to make sure you aren't running low and to check the condition of the oil. When it start to get dark, feel thin, or smell like solvent, change it.

Their dominator is good stuff! According to the research forced performance did http://store.forcedperformance.net/...Performance Recommendations for Motor Oil.pdf
it has a zinc% of 1575 and a phos% of 1424

I'm currently running Valvoline vr1 conventional, Because of its high zinc/phos percentages I've never had any catastrophic turbo failures with it, but i have noticed that it will get nasty black in a short time period. I was going to go with their synthetic brand vr1 to see if it improved, but that can only be bought online so i figure since i have to order my oil online I may as-well make the switch Amsoil dominator for a couple $ more.

Is there a price difference between the two?

Amsoil only makes 100% synthetic oil's. With Valvoline there is approximately a $6 difference between their non-synthetic VR1 and the synthetic VR1 racing oil. Valvoline conventional can be picked up at your local O'reilly or pep boys for about $7 (But only in straight 60 grade or 20w50) Their synthetic vr1 oil can be bought online/eBay. if anyone is looking to go with 10w30 vr1 take note that the zddp levels drop to 1100 (not mentioned in FP's research)

10w30 and 20w50 Valvoline Synthetic VR1 racing oil is on the shelves everyday at autozone for $9.16 a quart. They also carry Royal purple full synthetic racing oil for a little over $9.00 a quart, but only in 10w30. Walk in and done, no shipping bull chit.

yeah the climate in ohio changes like a girls attitude. It can be sunny and warm for 2 hours, and cold and shitty the next 22hours. I normally just run 10w30 all year round. Not sure if anyone else's dsm's are like mine, but it runs better if it's a quart low LOL
