Hey everyone, right now I'm in the middle of a rebuild and upgrade on my car. I am looking to put a 20g turbo on it but all I can find is knock offs. Obx,cx ect... I did find one mhi 20g but it was 1000$ is that typical? If so wouldnt I be better off going with a fp black turbo for close to the same price?

Thanks

Hi, I was looking for the same thing, since I hadn't had a dsm in about 10 years. I chose something similar, but better... the Holset HX35. You can contact @JusMX141 (moderator here and turbo rebuilder, and where I got mine). It's an oil-only turbo, which makes that part of the install simpler, yet you might have to configure your own drain. There is a bolt-on option for the hotside, which is the BEP .55 a/r housing, which can be purchased at extremepsi.com You'll be looking at roughly $450 + $250 for that setup, plus oil feed/drain hardware.

It's faster spooling, and can provide more power, than a td06-20g. You can google "the holset thread" from google.com and it'll bring you back here to a huge thread with tons of info on the holsets.

If you want to stick with "bolt-on" mitsu-style turbo's, brand new, then I'd wait for when FP does a sale on an FP green or red, which seems to happen once a year at random times, and they usually throw in the oil lines.

Or, search the classifieds for an entire used setup in good condition, with manifolds, o2, feed/drain, etc.

If a 20g was what you are looking for the forced performance Hta68 at 51lb min would be what you want. The fp black flows 68lbs a min compared to the 20g at around mid 40s. Completely different class of turbo.

Honestly I wanted a holset set up but I thought there would be more to get it set up and running. I only chose a 20g because I assumed it was the biggest bolt on turbo but for the price of that I would rather go bigger . I have a goal of 400awhp so bigger is better then I have to push it less to achieve my goal.

All of the results from journal bearing Blacks I've seen thus far have been lackluster compared to what they're rated. Like this: http://www.dsmtuners.com/threads/fp-jb-black-install-first-impressions.471748/#post-153486611

I wouldn't exactly call 27psi @ 4800rpms logging 51 lb/min "exceptional" by any means. The 68HTA could pull this off spooling about 1000rpms sooner depending what your desired boost level is. I guess that's why I'm seeing a bunch of new or lightly-used Blacks showing up in the classifieds on here and elsewhere.

It's funny to see people consider a either 20G or a Black....you'd be surprised how often this happens. They forget that there are basically two complete classes of turbochargers in between the two.

i actually just read that thread, well here is where i am at. i am looking for a 400awhp set up that i do not have to run the piss out of to get that number, i know its all about tuning. after looking at the number to get a black set up turbo, ext waste gate off the o2 and ect.. the cost is really high espically for a turbo that will likely let me down in the end. what is your suggestion JusMX? is a 20g the answer or do i opt for a hx35 7 blade? or maybe a turbo not mentioned.

Those holset pages are packed with so much info it's overwhelming to find stuff sometimes. Correct me if I'm wrong please .

For a holset install I'll need to...

Get the obvious the turbo, bep housing
An external dump setup
Oil feed line with restricter from the oil filter housing
A large oil drain line
And I will need to get a non turbo water pipe and dent it for the compressor.

Along with fuel upgrades

I will not be able to run e85 here due to availability so I plan to run 1250 fic's and spray methonal. Will that be enough to make good use of a hx35 7 blade? Or am I cutting my self short due to fuel?
