I recently purchased a 95 gsx from the original owner in awesome shape. I've driven it for a few weeks now and it ran like new. I went to do an oil change last night and apparently forgot to tighten down the drain plug, and today on my 35 mile commute the low oil indicator came on. I immediately pulled over and realized that I didn't tighten the drain plug, and tightened it down and topped off my oil and thought that would be that. Another 3 miles go by and the low oil light comes back on! I double check the filter/housing and drain plug and they are still tight so I started the car and the oil is just pouring from the front cover/oil pan area and my oil pressure sensor got broken off somehow in those few miles. What would cause this to happen? This car didn't leak a drop before I changed the oil and now it will just pours out until the oil level gets below the front cover/oil pan level. Would running a few miles with the oil low cause anything to instantly gush oil?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Before you put the new seal in, definitely inspect the gasket surface. Any deformity could cause a major leak, especially near the oil pan due to it being so close to the road.

I think your oil pan has been over tightened and deformed. top edge of oil pan. Also Are you sure you are not over filling to start with?

Now I'm wondering.... At normal level, with the engine off, on any vehicle, is the top edge of the oil pan normally submerged?

Would I be ok to reinstall the motor mount and start the motor with the timing cover off to see where the leak is coming from?

From that picture I'm not seeing alot of oil. did you clean it all off already or is this how you found it? Looks a damn sight cleaner than quite a few pictures posted here. I would expect to find everything dripping with oil if a seal went bad enough to pump out.

disclaimer: I don't know diddly squat about 2g's but IMO with relative caution should be no problem running without cover.

When you said "pouring out of the timing cover" I wouldn't have expected it to be this clean. And yes, you can put the motor mount back on and run it for a minute, shouldn't even need that much. It only takes a few seconds for the motor to build up the oil pressure. Set the camera up on video and film it.

Is the timing belt dry ?

Yes the oil got everywhere but due to it being so clean it was hard to see.

It ended up being the seal behind the balance shaft sprocket popping out. I tested it by pushing it back in and putting the sprocket back on and no more leak. I tore it back out and installed a new seal and am now just finishing installing the timing cover.

Thanks guys.

So you're going to keep that oil-bathed timing belt on there ? If so, it could (probably will) have a very decreased life and could cause you major problems if it snaps while you're driving.

I'd definitely put in a new T-BELT!

- please take no chances with an oil soaked belt, for the oil being somewhat of a corrosive fluid, will break down the rubber/nitrile compound and destroy itself in a heartbeat.. and your motor.
