I recently purchased a 95 gsx from the original owner in awesome shape. I've driven it for a few weeks now and it ran like new. I went to do an oil change last night and apparently forgot to tighten down the drain plug, and today on my 35 mile commute the low oil indicator came on. I immediately pulled over and realized that I didn't tighten the drain plug, and tightened it down and topped off my oil and thought that would be that. Another 3 miles go by and the low oil light comes back on! I double check the filter/housing and drain plug and they are still tight so I started the car and the oil is just pouring from the front cover/oil pan area and my oil pressure sensor got broken off somehow in those few miles. What would cause this to happen? This car didn't leak a drop before I changed the oil and now it will just pours out until the oil level gets below the front cover/oil pan level. Would running a few miles with the oil low cause anything to instantly gush oil?

Thanks in advance for the help.

There's oil flowing past that sensor, without it, that's just an outlet for oil pressure now. If you can find a 1/8" bspt (british pipe thread) plug or an oem replacement for the sensor, do that asap.

Local stores usually carry that bottom sensor, which is the needle gauge. Not so many have the dummy light, which I don't think you need, since the dummy light is working. Your needle gauge is dead, correct ?

Should be this one:

Sorry, I should have been more clear. The sensor is still in place, the wire that attatches to the sensor is now broken so the needle gauge doesnt work, but oil is not coming from the sensor location.

time to pull the front cover clean it off real good and determine where the leak is

You possibly ran drastically low on oil, starving the oil pump/front cover of lubrication, and burned up a seal on the oil pump sprocket, or another small seal there, possibly the front main seal. Is the oil coming from behind the timing cover and thru the opening at the crank pulley ?

It sounds like you need to pull the front case and repair or replace whatever you find. This will be a full timing belt job also.

I am kicking myself for not double checking the drain plug. The timing belt was changed 10k ago along with a whole motor rebuild and I have the receipts for it so I was hoping to not have to deal with that stuff for a while. The oil only pours out when the engine is running. Does that help at all?

Maybe a picture?? If it ran low you probably have a balance shaft/front main seal leaking under pressure. Pull the front cover off and shoot a picture for us to see if possible.

Agreed on the t-belt job, you now have oil all over your timing components, that's a big no-no, particularly an oil-saturated t-belt.

I had a oil pump sprocket seal leak and cover everything in my timing area with oil(sprocket was cracked). It is a huge job to pull everything apart. Hours on top of a timing belt job. You have to remove everything from that area, including the cam gears, all pulleys, and the motor mount. Get some good brake cleaner and a lot of rags and paper towels. Clean everything until all the oil is gone. The good news? As long as your timing components are in good shape (which being 10K old, they should be), you don't have to replace them. Just clean them very well. The only thing you should have to replace is the belt. And you HAVE to replace it. It soaks up the oil and can slip or stretch. Its trash now. Good Luck.

So other than whichever seal is bad I will need a timing belt, bs belt, and what else?? I am assuming my other components will be ok.

You are assuming its a seal. You wont know until you get in there. Oil pump could be bad, other various gaskets etc. Did you also check your oil filter and make sure its tight?

very interested on what's the issue, it sucks this has to happen, but like everyone said this is where you'll really get to know the in's and out's of your dsm. Best of luck!

I had a front main seal go on my motor. Only time it leaked is when I drove the car. I can see oil dripping from the TB side after I parked. Because it only leaked when I drove the car it made finding the source that much harder. I had oil everywhere. Howerver, it didn't leak if i did a cold start and let the car run/idle. Took me a while to figure out where the source was coming from with the help of oil dye.

Like others stated I suggest taking things off to inspect. Good luck.

I have the exterior belts and upper timing cover off, but have not had a chance to remove the lower timing cover to see the source of the leak with my work schedule. I'm hoping to get some time this weekend. Thanks for the help so far... Dsm community is awesome.

Who built the engine originally before it started leaking or was it still factory? Just curious..
