I recently got my car back from the transmission shop. I had sent it there due to a bad master cylinder and hard shifting. Let me list the symptoms I had prior to my latest problem:

  • "Sticky" shifting. It would go into gear but it was hard to move the shifter around. Even in neutral it would barely wiggle.
  • Clutch pedal went soft.
The day after I got it back (I had only drove it maybe 10 miles by this point), I come to a stop, downshift into 1st gear, and then start accelerating. I felt the clutch engage and I could get a tad bit of power to the wheels, but it would just start over-revving when I hit the gas instead of launching forward like normal. I rolled into a gas station and tried to move from first gear. Shifted fine. Wouldn't move but the engine would rev.
Tried all the other gears. Nothing there either. I forgot to try going into reverse though. Anyway, I towed it back to the shop and they are telling me it's most likely my clutch. While I believe them, I don't want to ask them to replace my clutch if it's something less serious. I already wasted $250 by having them work on it. And a transmission shop couldn't tell me that my clutch was wearing out? I'm tired of being ripped off and I need some sound advice.

Edit: This is a 1996 Eagle Talon TSi. AWD transmission. Currently running an XTD stage 4, 6 puck (Previous owner installed it less than 4 months ago. I bought the car back from him this past November)

Best advise would be to buy yourself a service manual and/or get to reading and start doing things like this yourself! Saves you money! :D Although, this does sound like a clutch issue. But also could be that they didnt adjust the master cylinder correctly if at all. Check out this video and make the adjustment and see if it helps. If not you might have to look into replacing the clutch.

Sounds like you ripped the hub loose from the disk. If it's a solid disk, I bet that's what happened. I ripped all the rivets from my xtd disk. It was only 6 months old.

i had the same thing last year with my XTD clutch when i removed the gear box the center of the disk had striped all of the rivet's and was no longer attached i could select any gear and car would not move

I jacked the car up so all wheels are off the ground, put the car in gear, and with engine off, see if you can turn the wheels. I could. I then pulled the rubber vent off the center of the bellhousing and could see the hub turn. That's when I knew I stripped the hub.

Try putting the car in either 2nd or 3rd while the clutch is disengaged, engage the clutch quick and see if it stalls; if it stalls the clutch isn't bad. If the car doesn't stall but the rpms go up then the clutch is bad.
