Howdy.

Just recently transferred to TX from Illinois. In IL, the 96-98 2G's were on their OBDII exception list because of the "Ready State" monitor problem, so they just did a MIL check. Not so here in TX. Once the 96 & 97's fail the OBDII scan, they get a Dyno two-speed tailpipe sniff test. Fair enough. My 98 has the exact same problem as the 96 & 97 but it just fails with no chance to get the dyno test. Why the difference? The dude in Austin told me that cars don't make the exception list unless 20% of them fail the OBDII scan. The problem is that Mitsubishi fixed the Ready State problem in 98 for the non-turbos but not for the turbos. (See TSB 03-13-005) Since most of the cars were non-turbos, 98 has a much better test success rate. The texas system doesn't differentiate between turbos and non-turbos so I'm screwed.

I called the dealership and while the guy wasn't rude, he sure wasn't helpful.

Got any sage advice?

As I understand it, the 99's don't have the awful drive cycle procedure like the 96-98's had and aren't on the EPA's exception list. Could I put a MD359402 ecu in mine and get the improved drive cycle procedure? (TSB 04-13-012) I only need to get 3 of the 5 monitors in the ready state. Oh, and I do remember reading somewhere about spyders having a different ecu pin out than coupes. Something about it sending 5v to the fuel pump relay instead of supplying ground. Sounds strange to me, but is it a concern?

Thanks in Advance,

Rob

Im in San Antonio. They arent strict here AT ALL.

They are only strict on emissions in DFW, Austin, Houston and El Paso. Don't worry though, it'll come your way eventually.
Eh. Wont matter to me. My gfs best friend owns an inspection site  If youre willing to make the 1hr drive down here...im sure she can easily take care of you ;)

I plan on moving with my friend to Houston, Texas this year from Fort Wayne, Indiana. Reading this scares me about the move now because my 99 spyder is incredibly far past stock and have no idea how to make it pass any emissions test...

Are you throwing a check engine light?

What you need to pass is no MIL and no more than two of these monitors in a not ready state:

Misfire
Fuel Sys
Comp Cmpnt
Catalyst
Evap
O2
O2 Hot
EGR Sys
DLC

Throw on your OBDII scanner and check your statuses. You may be fine.

Well I have DSM Link V3 so no I have no check engine lights and if i do I can turn them off but as for using a normal scanner it doesn't seem to work at least not the one from advance auto where I work. Maybe a more professional one would work it just refuses to connect to my car at work so i have to use my laptop when checking codes which for me is no big deal just fooling inspection scares me.

No worries, you won't be fooling anyone.

Not being able to hook up a standard OBDII scanner, like the one at work, will be a problem. That's all that they do besides a safety inspection (tires, lights, horns and brakes.) If they can't read your ecu via the connection port with their equipment, you will not pass. I think that your first order of business is getting the scanner at work to connect. Maybe this thread will help. Once you get that connected, check the ready status of the monitors. If you have two or fewer in a Not Ready state, you'll pass.

Here is the relevant doc for emissions testing.

Avoid the nice areas, go to the "not so nice area smog station" Or keep going to them, till you get that guy who likes dsm's and passes you!

Tests are $40 a shot. How much do you propose that I offer as a bribe?

When I lived in Cali and my Camaro kept failing, I went to a couple local smog stations and none would pass me, ended up at this one shop out of town, they guy there was pretty chill, had lot's of cars and asked lots of questions, when I failed, I was like man, this is like the 5th time failing, wish I could just pay a fee and call it a day. The guy smiled and said, maybe we can figure something out! Dude left and came back around with a T/A, he pulled his car into the other test bay, and passed me on his own car. I gave him 80$ to pass me, paid the test fees to make it legit, and made a friend in the process, I went to him for years after that before I moved. I don't miss California emissions one bit!

like stated above dont go to the nicer spots of town, go to the outskirts or the kinda run down ones, or find the ones that half the employees dont speak enginsh, have had good luck there in the past. luckily I met one of my neighbors yesterday who runs an inspection place and pay the normal fees and im good to go on my dsm.
