and its not quite what most people coming here are bringing. but, i feel like it might be accepted none the same.

As the name suggests, this is a 24 hours of lemons car we seek to build into the worst/best/interesting.... thing with wheels we can.

its a 91 base model eclipse with a 5spd and the single cam motor.

its not much to look at, but we have some plans for it. its got VERY clean interior we will be looking to offload.

it currently has a driveability issue and feels down on power, it sputters through out the rev range and all speeds and gears, more noticable in the lower gears. we (as a team) took turns driving it over about a 45 minute period tonight trying to maybe run the bad fuel out of it. tomorrow we will be diving into diagnosis of the car.

any help or ideas is appreciated, we are going to start by testing the MAF and the fuel pump. according to the guy we bought it from he has replaced the FPR and the fuel filter and just decided to get rid of it.

Well im willing to be that there is low compression in the cylinders! Check them and be sure its within spec if not then it needs a rebuild; or maybe timing is off a tooth. Check the timing and be sure about it. Then if just replace normal things such as plugs, wires, gas, and fuel filter. Yes i know you said the previous owner just did the fuel filter but who knows enless you have the recipt.

You said your planning on some offroading? Its a fwd i would suggest selling it and getting an awd then.

i'll get out my compression tester and give that a go.

i believe you misread the post. we will be looking to OFFLOAD the interior. apologize for the wording. the filter looks new. so we sort of beleive that.

Welcome too the group good luck with your build.
As far as trouble shooting the issue start small work your way up no need too load the parts cannon until you have an accurate idea of where your problems maybe. After you check your Fuel, Fire and air areas a compression test would be a good idea. What kind of build is your team looking at?

Well team breakfast and diagnosis session went rather quickly and smoothly.

upon getting some daylight and such to go look around and poke at the car we found a large gaping hole behind the MAF on the intake tube letting a LOT of unmetered air into the engine.

threw some duct tape at it for now. solved the stutter issue. so, sorry dude who we bought the car from.

i stand corrected the interior is not blue apparently, again now that its in the daylight.

it is a 24 hours of lemons build, which is a $500 car endurance race. safety equipment and such is not included in the budget. and you can deduct money for selling parts off of the car.

well then if i were you then you should part the car and deduct all that money from selling parts then buy an awd or a fwd turbo and sell stock parts and get a little performance and bam win!

there has been talk of this, but the problem we see with doing that is 1, it has to be in reason, the $500 decision is made by the tech inspectors at the race, obviously a flawlessly running TSI/GSX is not going to be $500. we are VERY happy with how the car runs at this point after locating the issue it had and we have no doubt it will be reliable enough for us to make the race. while being fuel efficient enough to not have to come off the track every 10 laps for fuel. its an endurance race, any time spent in the pits is time distance not traveled. winner is most distance traveled.

we will be parting it out, we so far are considering a port and polish (free) cam regrind (roughly $70 from delta cams) functional ram air intake(free/cheap), springs/shocks (maybe), and are going to look into if the turbo/AWD sway bars are an upgrade and worth it.

brakes are considered part of safety so the 2 piston caliper upgrade is already on the list.

I would stay with the single piston brake calipers. Single piston setup is lighter and can fit smaller rims. For a base 1.8 the singles are more than enough stopping force.

weight reduction will do the car wonders. you should have no problem getting it under 2100lbs.

Also it takes very little to bump these cars up into the 40mpg range.

How much of that $500 budget is already used up in the purchase price of the car?

we purchased the car for $350. We are estimating with the sale of the seats, interior, windows, and lights and such we can easily drop that back to zero. if not negative.

Weight reduction is planned and will be EXTENSIVE as possible, installing a cage WILL be adding weight. we are currently looking at this cage in DOM that we would be welding in.

wecome to the forms. when you get it done make sure to take pictures because now i want to see it and where are you racing yakima speed way?

the race is at the ridge motorsport park.

pictures and a build log will be started and posted once work begins later this year. for now i'm actually going to daily for reliability testing (and my other daily isnt on the road yet and my suburban sucks on gas)

I work in yakima. What color is your dsm. If you need cheap parts i know a couple hidden treasures in the valley.

welcome to the club, just a bit of advice, you have a 30 year old car so every time you work on something, just buy new bolts. there is a nice thread somewhere, with all the bolt information for the car and more often than not, you can get just as good or better for a lot cheaper from a nuts and bolts website, over OEM.
